Original engine in my Samurai?
« on: January 16, 2008, 12:49:36 PM »
I have a Suzuki Samurai 2002 Model "Long". Some say it is called model Espana or Santana but I don't know for sure.
 It has a 1.9 CC Renault Diesel engine. I have heard that is the original engine for this model. But a friends
friend say he is almost sure the the engine has been changed.
Could anyone help me............. It looks almost like this but without the thing in front.

You should be able to tell if it is a Santana built model because it will say so on the VIN plate. The VIN usually starts VS for Santana models. There were 1.9 diesel engined santanas so it could well be the original engine.

I remember talking about this a while back.  Some of them Santanas supposedly came with a Renault diesel, but I can't tell you which ones.

Where is the VIN plate located? There is a little plate under the hood but it doesn't
say anything about model but it does say what oil to use and another Dupont plate with
color info and a code Z8D.

I'll ask someone who will probably know

You'll have to ask a main dealer, that VIN code is coming up as invalid. A local dealer may have a more complete list. I believe the N in the code means 1992.

Edit:
The guy I asked, our newest member mlines (thanks Martin), has done some more research. From that and the stuff I found on Wikipedia it seems that:

VSE = Santana
SJ = SJ
L = Long Body    S = Short body
04 = 1.9 diesel, 00 = gas, 03 = turbo diesel
C = Car (J model), V=Van (V model)
N = 1992
T = assembly plant, A = a different assembly plant

The A assembly plant isn't shown for that model on the Suzuki database but it looks very much like your vehicle is as it left the factory.

It can't be a 1992. The engine and car in general is in to good condition to be 15 years old.  This is
a 2002 Samurai Santana "Normal". Mine is exactly like this beside that mine is longer.
It seems like the Renault 1.9 Diesel Engine is original.

Thank you nelson miguel! So what you are saying is that I can be 100% sure the Renaul 1.9 Diesel
engine is original in my 2002 Samurai Santana? If so, great!!
I have some more question about the engine but I don't have time now,

Well my Vitara has the N in that position too and mine is a 2000 model so I guess that Suzukl/Santana don't use the year code. That may be a US thing.
