OK new guy here chance to pick up 86 tintop
« on: May 08, 2009, 09:50:13 PM »
Have a chance to pick up an 86 tintop, straight, stock, no dents or rust, needs tires and owner says engine smokes like a mosquito spray truck, sitting for years.  $1000.  Not interested in hard rock climbing just the 1000s of miles of sometimes 4x4 here in N Arizona. Ideas? Suggestions?

Here in Oregon Samurai's sell for about $2000 up to $3000 in good condition. If its strait and is going to pass DEQ, then I would say its not a bad deal. My best suggestion is to look and see what Samurai's are worth in your area and compare.

I would find out what kind of smoke it is spewing, may only need a head gasket or valve guide seals. If it needs an engine you could be looking at an additional $700-$1000 for an engine, as jawman stated, check out your local listings of Sammi's for sale, you may find it is a good deal or not.

My thought of course is to do a compression check. Valve seals are a good idea along with head gaskets.  It comes with a complete tranny soft parts kit but I'm told nothing is wrong in the tranny. He was going to drop a VW diesel in it but went on to other projects I'll probably know more next week.  Thanks

A $1000 will get you a whole 1.6L swap here. Stock 1.3L engines go for $100 all day long around my area. Short blocks can be robbed from a Geo Metro too. An entire rebuild kit including re-ringing, valve guide seals & a new head gasket should be sub $200, and I can't imagine needing more than $300 in machine work (if any).

Tin tops are especially rare, and in demand. It tends to give 30-100% more value depending on where you live. $1,000 is a pretty good deal, even with a fried engine. Samurais are getting to be quite rare, and it's hard to find ones under $2,000 most places. I just sold a clean stocker for about $3,000 a couple years ago.

I guess it depends where you are, 1K not uncommon here in the Bay Area for an exchange engine  ;D
