Sierra to Vitara Diff conversion
« on: February 23, 2004, 01:38:00 PM »
Gday, I have a 97 V6 Vitara with an exploded front alloy diff carrier (as they do..) I am led to believe that a Sierra steel front carrier will fit the Vitara housing and I can fit my Vitara internals (5.125 R&P) into the Sierra carrier.  :P Has anybody done this ?? Thanks Dick from Aussie.  ;D

What you call a sierra we call Samurais, right?

I'm not sure if a Sammy 3rd will bolt directly to a Sidekick housing.

I think the Grand vitara 3rd members will bolt on no prob.

But if your gonna replace the alluminum 3rd with a steel one, you might as well replace the alluminum housing with a steel one too.

I know some guys have used XL7 housings and bolted them onto their kicks.

Is it a bolt on swap without any modifications?

Check out the Article Archives; Under the technical section look at the Brentwood,TN and the San Diego articles, they will both tell you about the Grand Vitara diff install. There is also one in Hagens section about making a stronger pinion mount that would probably help you with a Sami application. Check with Hawk about parts ( 1-888-samurai ) I dont think the shipping would be to bad, but it may take a while.

The diff carrier from a Grand Vitara, with manual transmission also works.  Whether GV or XL7, you will have to plug the hole for the air-line that activates the hubs.  I just bought a new carrier from the Suzuki Dealer.  Man, that was foolish!  $275.00, if I recall correctly...   :o

Thanks for the input ! ;)
I have now located a complete GV (STEEL) front end for 350 Aussie Pesos.. Thats a good deal here !  ;D
Now I will be able to hammer it !!
So the next part to die will be ?? CV's ??  I thought they looked fairly strong.. :-/

Yea, the CV's are next in line. I actually have broken alot of them and never trashed a housing. I went to the Anvil and XL-7 set up for CV replacement, not because of trashed housings.
