Homemade 3" Body Lift (Trackick)
« on: July 08, 2004, 07:29:47 AM »
Ok, so I'm getting all the parts ready to make a homemade body lift. Here's a list of what I think I'll be needing so far:

* (6) 2x2x4" square tubing
* (6) 1/2" 1.5" long bolts with nuts and washers
* (2) longer bolts for the front mounts... not sure the dimensions of these... can someone help me out??
* (6) Hockey pucks (or something similar) for the front mounts

I'm not worrying about the gas tank extensions, because I'll be raising the tank as well. I already have the stuff to make the shifter extensions, so that's not on the list.

Is there anything I'm forgetting/overlooking? Any better method to block up the front mounts than hockey pucks with holes drilled in them and longer bolts? What are the dimensions of the bolts that came with the Calmini 3" BL?

those little rectangle peaces that you weld to the frame that has no bolt holes.  that the best i can explane them.  and why are you getting 2X2X4 sqare tube?  why not 3X3X4?

Because you still have to have a 1" spacer on top to keep the fixed body stud working right... unless you were to put it on the inside.

Don't need to buy anything for the steering... just heat, extend and weld ;) ;D

I have ;)

but for some reason, 4 doors seem to be a tad different than 2 doors when it comes to body mounts... I think, if I understood Heather's guide correctly :)

Also, I've got a BL in my black Tracker... bought it from Calmini, and was a waste of money IMO, and the only things that were actually worth paying for were the instructions and the bumper relocation brackets (which I never used) :-/

A guy in our club bought a body lift for a swb and it wouldn't fit his lwb

I agree completely with the comments about the Calmini body lift, not even finished - it was supplied in bare metal.

Then that confirms my suspisions of 2 and 4 door models being slightly different... mounting wise.

I was dumbfounded when I got raw steel pieces after paying $140 + $20 shipping for the BL. Not even the bumper relocator deals are poweder coated... kinda made me wonder why I payed $160 for a body lift that I could've made with materials that cost less than shipping did. >:(

Cool, neat to see you're making your own!

I still have to ask about the 2x2x4... why the 4"? ...can you explain how you plan to orientate the tube? With bolts and all?

Are you planning on just using the tubing directly between the body and frame, with no spacer bushings? I guess this might work, because then the body bolt might be long enough to go all the way through.. (the 2" side anyway). But I don't think I would recommend it because there will be essentially NO give between your body and frame. Plus then you'd only be getting about a 1.5" body lift because there was already a stock .5" spacer bushing in there...

I would think the 4" would make it hard to get a wrench inside to tighten town the nuts?

I guess I am confused... :P (I probably sound like it)

Someday when the opportunity presents itself I'll have to check out a 2 door's body mounts. I thought the mounts were pretty much the same, but there were only 6, not 8. So you could follow my article, and omit two mounts.

I've probably had a 4 door apart and together about 6 or 7 times while I've either put a body lift on one, or fixed a body lift on one.

Hmm...

I also think 4" will make it hard to tighten the bolts. BUT a 2 door also has 8 body mounts (at least mine did  :P) I did it with 3*3*3 inch tube stuff and it works pretty well, but be sure to put the little plastic thingies that go through the chassis in the rubber bushings because if you don't it sounds like someone is lying under your truck and knocking on the floor from the underside while you're driving  :o It can get a bit annoying... I also think that if you do it without bushings, the chassis and the body become one and you can get serious and not very funny vibrations on the inside....
But as further, Be succesfull  ;D

Hrm... I believe that the Calmini kit has blocks that are 4" long... but they may be somewhat shorter, too :-/

This is what the Calmini kit looks like on the back 6 mounts of a 2 door (I'll be pretty much copying the Calmini BL off my black Tracker):

It has a 1" spacer sitting on a 2x2x4" piece of square tubing. I'd take a picture of my black Tracker's body lift, but it's dark out and I'm in my undies :)

If I find that 4" is too long to tighten the nut back on, I might make it shorter... who knows? :P
