newbie t-case question

Hey all
Just starting my first Sammi repairs of an 87 that has been badly neglected.I read a post about towing a sammi and how you need to circulate the t-case oil,I won't be towing I hope but makes me wonder if extra lube circulation and cooling would be worthwhile in a DD with some easy offroad driving.I would think that the t-case would be the weakest major link in the drive train and it wouldn't be to hard to pump the t-case oil around if that would be usefull.As a newbie does the t-case get hot and would it help to circulate the oil? Old timer input would be tolerated greatly.  Thanks   chitzu

I can only give you my opinion, but I dingy tow mine all the time and havn't had any problems.  I just make sure the t-case is in neutral.  The PO of my new one left it in gear (accidently) and it ruined trans and engine.  Transfer case was still in good shape.

I have flat towed mine 1700 miles one way (And BACK) from the mountains of northern Nevada with no problems.
I did follow the owners manual and started it, let it idle with the main transmission in gear and the transfer case in neutral
at the end of every day's travel.

On my rig with stock axles, I have noticed after long on highway runs, my rear axle gets very warm too the touch,
and "Heat Gunned" it at 130-140 degrees. (Note Day Temp was 95 F)

If you are towing it in neutral(either the transmission or t-case) you need to circulate the oil on the gears(transission}.   every now and then.  I do it when I stop for gas.

Yes I can see that the output bearing would be turning but no gears are slinging oil around when towing.My question is would it be beneficial to circulate and cool the t-case while driving? This is what happens when you have stuff around the shop and you need to use it for something,stuff like an oil pump and 12 volt gearmotor. On second thought I'm not sure what would be turning or not.  thanks alll

It's a thoughtful idea, but would only add complexity to a simple system that doesn't need it. On top of that the TCase ( and manual gearbox for that matter ) both use heavy weight gear oil that would be a bitch for any pump to circulate. That's just my opinion, but Ive been known to over think a system or two and end up taking it all out in favor of simplicity.  ;)
PS, I really understand the need to make  something   from good useable parts laying around  ;D

If it doesn't need it thats great,but when you have stuff laying around like a air to liquid intercooled turbo you just can't resist. :laugh:
