tracker gears in a samurai

tracker gears in a samurai

i just picked up this front third out of a 5 spd tracker. i believe they are 512's... i want to put them in my samurai... from what i inderstand, its easier to put just the R&P, but i need a spacer? if you look in the pic there is a spacer behind the ring, not sure if thats stock, or what i need.

i am waiting for another tracker to come out to the scrap yard (next week) to grap another front third... but i need to figure out what else i need to use these gears...

oh, its an 88 samurai

It will go in just as it is but you need to add a drive shaft spacer(if lifted) for the bolt pattern of the drive shaft or put the drive shaft on the flange drill a hole through it and bolt it together and then drill out the other three holes, your front diff should be a 22 spline (early tracker 89-95) and the rear should be a 26 spline (95 and newer) axel, the diffs will work as is if your easy on them and don't run a real large or heavy tire, other wise transfer the gears over to the sammie carriers.

That third (as all Sidekick/Tracker thirds) is aluminium. I wouldn't count on it taking any abuse. To correctly install the gears in your Sammy thirds you need a "can" to keep the pins from falling out and the bearing adjuster needs to be modified.

The easy way is to order the can kit from Trail Tough

That is not a spacer behind/under the ring gear.....it is the two halves of the carrier.  The trackick carrier is a "2 piece" carrier that is held together by the bolts holding the ring gear to it.
I believe it is Rocky Road that sells a spacer that does go under the ring gear to space it over a little.  The other vendors sell a "can and shim" kit, that consists of a "can", that slips over the carrier to hold the cross pins in place, and a "shim" that goes under one of the carrier bearing preload adjusters, so you can tighten the adjuster enough to set the backlash and preload correctly.

nice, i tihink i'll go with the trail tought kit, seeing as i want to run as big a tire as i can...

whats the chance of running 35's... lol

well not the chance, but what would be the first thing to break, keeping in mind i'm in florida and theres not a singe rock for hundreds of miles. would it snap axles just putting through mud?

most likly i'll end up running 33's but i do know where i can get some 35 boggers!

The Birfields or the splines will probably be the first to break.

Usefully aren't I.  :D

You can get Birfield Cup kits that will strengthen the Birfields and allow you to run 35's.  Calimini has heavy duty front axels that use the 26 spline instead of the 22 if you manage to twist your splines by loading up your front end against rocks with a broken ez-locker that seems to run as a spool making it a pain in the *** to turn...  Not that I would know anything about that.  :P

You can also get Newfield front axles from Roadless Gear http://www.roadlessgear.com/html/newfields/index.html that mean you don't have to do any grinding on your axle tube in order to make them fit.

In either case you will need to run the 26 spline gears from the front of a 96 and up Tracker or from the rear of a Samurai.  The Florida guys will let you know if axle breakage is an issue down there.  :)

i'll probably go with the cups for now...

now i just nead to pull the 1.3 out, and slap the 1.6 in so i can get working on the spoa, and possible yj springs...

oh, what if i use hub fuses, would those break before the birfields (protecting them too), or just before the axles?

Just give it gas with the wheels going streight ahead you should be fine, the fuse will work if you grind them down a little, stock they have too much area to break and you would need to get the bolt kit from spider trax to keep them on your rig, some guys use the stock hubs and put grade two bolts in place of the stock ones and that is supposed to work like a fuse, if you use birfields it just moves the problem inward so it is harder to fix.

The hub fuses don't work very well in Suzukis. They are designed for larger Dana axles (I forget which ones). They could well be the last things to break! Dave Jones had problems with them in his Vit, Somewhere I have a copy of the email that Warn sent him

I have exploded three Stock Sidekick CV axles with the fuses installed.  The fuses do not work at all.  Save your money.
