Hey guys, I recently got an 89' Sidekick and I love it.

2 issues:  Extemely high idle on initial startup when cold; around 3000.  After running a while it idles around 1000.  1.6L TBI motor   Why?
Manual shifter seems to have ALOT of play/slack in it; definitely not what I'd call normal.

Any ideas on these issues???  Thanks.

I would also like to know about the idle,  I have a 1990 tracker 1.6L 8v.  On start up it goes to 3000 rpm for about 5 seconds then drop down to around 2000 rpm and then surges between 1400 and 2000 rpm.  When warmed up it idles around 900 rpm.
No problems otherwise and it did run today and its 6 degrees below zero.

I can't remeber the term for it but alot of vehicals do that.  Mine 94 tracker is around 300 at stratup and then drops down to 300 when warm.  It is by design, just can't remeber the name off hand.

Anyone have thouhts on high idle??

Check all the vacuum pipes for leaks or blockages, then clean all the earths. Try adjusting the idle screw, I'm not familiar with the 89 ECU, its an odd one but somene else should know the procedure. If that doesn't then check out the thermo-pellet on the TBI unit.

It is probably a vaccume leak. Even if your hoses look OK, take them off and inspect them for holes. My 89 did that foa a while untill I found the hole in the hose.

I agree on the vacuum leak! I recently replaced the motor in mine and forgot a vacuum line and it did the same!

Thanks for the input guys; I'll be tearing into the TBI and emmissions tomorrow to seek out any faulty vacuum hoses and connecting pipes.

Thanks, it's nice to know about the high idle.   I'll check out the vacuum lines, that's an easy place to start.
