Sami Instrument Panel Q's
« on: December 11, 2004, 07:33:45 PM »
Have an 88 Sami, put in a 1.6L 16v FI into it and when I went to change some of the bulbs in the Insrument Panel of the Sami, it seems as though the previous owner had done some testing on it to figure out the wiring or something as all of the terminals were marked, and one of the circuits was fried. May have been testing without a proper tester. Anyway I am gonna change it and was wondering if there was a later model IP that would fit properly and may also include some of the accessories that come with the 1.6 and its harness.

Does yours have a tach in it? did you put the speed sensor in it for the 16 valve?

It does have a tach, but I wasn't to sure if I had hooked the speed sensor up correctly, or if the panel even has a sensor, checking the wiring schematics again right now to see. If not maybe i need a different one. not really keen on the fit of the Kick IP. Suggestions?

Was just thinking about fixin the Instrument Panel with a rear window defrost repair kit.

Use a jumper wire, if it will fit, or if it
can be soldered to the contacts

The only sensor that the 88 Sami may have would be the 50k, 100k & 150k mile sensor and it seems only on the US models. There is an unused circuit where this is supposed to be connected so I'm not sure it even has the mileage sensor, but it definitly does't have the speed sensor.

So what to do, will look tommorrow and see if one can McIver the two IP's and see if wildgoody's rec' is doable. Either way unless I can find a panel the will fit nicely and has a Speed Sensor I am gonna have to McGyver something.

How important is the Speed Sensor? Is there a way around it.

Yes you need the speed sensor, trail tough does it for about fifty bucks, It will stall when you come to a stop light with out it, all it is is a reed switch that goes next to a spining magnet on the inside of the speedo, they come stock in the side kicks and are easy to put in the samurai speedo the holes are allready there, just add one wire for the comp. and one ground wire, I left the red white and blue wire with the switch for the comp. codes to show.

For 50 bucks, and it will
be right, no engineering
involved, I think that would
be worth the 50 Bucks

Took a look at the Sidekick speedo sized er up then took the Sami Speedo off the instrument panel and checked to see if the Kick speedo would fit; like it was meant to be. Had to poke two holes through the circuit paper? for the sensor screws. Wasn't sure if the circuitry was good as the tops of the circuit paper are not bare like the other terminals. So I did some testing, no contact. Put a (don't know what they call em) small jagged washer under the Ground screw and tighted er up worked good for the ground. Didn't work for the RS connection, tested some more and seems there is a break in the
