TBI questions
« on: May 02, 2004, 12:54:54 PM »
I am going to swap out my carb on my 88 Samurai for the TBI off of my 89 Sidekick. What do I need besides a high pressure fuel pump, ECU, and the wiring harness? This is for an off-road vehicle only ;); so I'm not worried about the emissions stuff uless I need them to send code to the computer for it to run. I want to use the least amount of unnessesary bits and pieces so it will look cleaner. I am also going to need a map of the vacuum lines. Any help woulod be great (especially from all you Track/Kick guys and gals who have the TBI).

I think you need to swap the intake manifold
too, all the Sammy intakes I've seen are for
2 barrel carbs and look restrictive compaired
to the 1.6 TBI intake

Right. I forgot to list the throttle body and intake, but I've got those as well.

That was the originan idea, however, I noticed that the block was cracked between the 2 and 3 cylinders when I was inspecting it before taking it the machine shop. I did end up with the 5.13s though. :)

On a side note.........does anyone know if I could stroke my 1.3 with the 1.6 crank and/or rods? Are the journals the same size? The bore centerlines? Rod to cylinder clearance?

Again, this seems to be far too much work for what it's worth. The 1.6L is supposed to be a really simple swap. Just pick up the whole engine and stick it in your Sammy... you'd probably enjoy the extra power of a 16v anyway.

If you get the Kick manifold complete with sensors then you'll have the air temp and water temp sensors and the wax valve thing that does the cold start air adjustment. You'll also need a Manifold Air Pressure sensor that is usually fixed on the Kicks bulkhead and a Vehicle Speed Sensor which is part of the Kick speedo assembly, someone (TT?) fits the sensor to the Sammi clocks. You'll also need an O2 sensor if you don't have one. Thers probably a few other things as well, I don't know how the main relay is wired on the Sammi.
I have been playing with the ECU for the Track/Kick, have a look at

its not a 'live' site I still have lots to do to it but may be of some help, at the very least it lists all the sensors and inputs/outputs

I was just thinking the same thing about 2 days ago,
I think it's not an option, or it would be done by now.

1.6L engind is 75mm bore 90mm stroke, if I recall
right.
