Gas in my oil?
« on: May 15, 2006, 09:26:32 PM »
Sorry to bring this up again....  had my oil changed today and was told there was a strong smell of gas in it.  The old oil was thin and black.   Changed it 1500 miles ago.  Are new fuels eating the carb gaskets?  Any ideas?  Don't want to start wearing out the rings.... Thanks!  Bought the zuk last summer- having a lot of fun.   1988 1/2  Sami 1.3L, SJ413, 84000 miles.

Start with a new fuel pump and go from there.

How many months ago was the last oil change? Does the oil level go up or is it just the odor?
What kind of driving do you do with it trail,dd or both? ;D

REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP NOW!

It is on the rear of the head on the passenger's side near the distributor.  Remove the two hoses and carefully mark which went where.  The pipe with no hose on it is a pressure vent for the pump and may be moist with oil or gas from the leak.  I believe the pump is held in place by two bolts.  Take them out and carefully slide the pump out.  Inside the mounting hole is a metal push-rod that drives the pump's lever via the camshaft.  Get a new pump and carefully re-insert it WITHOUT BUMPING THE PUMP LEVER. Bumping the pump lever may damage the pump's diaphragm thus ruining the new pump!

If the above seems beyond your skills right now, find a reliable mechanic to install a new pump.

If I am a bit excited about this it's because my first rebuilt engine was DESTROYED by a gasoline leak in the fuel pump which rinsed the engine and wrecked the main bearings.

Whatever you do, do NOT drive that truck except to get it fixed!

While I am not as enthusiastic as ACK (Then again I haven't lost and engine that way  :-\ ). I would agree with replacing your fuel pump.... immediately.

Double Ditto on the fuel pump replacement....  I wouldn't run it like that for long unless you're prepared to either change the oil every few hundred miles or replace the engine..  Do it soon..

Is this a common enough problem that I should keep one in my glove box? Wowzers!

My fuel pump went out, filling the crankcase and actually pumping the oil and gas out of my air filter. I think the engine is looser now, and it seems to consume more oil, although I never see blue smoke.
A long time ago, we used to drain oil on my 48 chev, replace the plug, and put a little kerosene into the crankcase and run thr engine for a minute or two and then drain off the sludge that collected, and refill with clean oil, but lots of gas would have to really do things to rings and bearings.
The pump isn't a hard job to change. buy a fuel filter at the same time and change that too.

Thanks for all the responses-  sounds like a new fuel pump is in order.   ack-  thanks for the clear instructions, etc.  FNG- last oil change was 6 mos and 1500 miles ago.  The oil level didn't go up but it didn't go down either.  Appears that whatever oil was burned was replaced by about the same amount of gas.  This truck is just run locally- plan to take it out on the beach one of these days.   Thanks again......

The gas leaking into the case may be minor.  When the crankcase heats up, the gas will likely evaporate and get sucked back into the intake.  You may not see an increase in oil level with a minor leak due to evaporation, but the smell will remain in the oil.

Regardless...  Find and fix the root cause...
