Installing a tach
« on: September 03, 2007, 07:04:49 PM »
I did a search and couldn't find any info on people installing tachs so I guess I will ask.  I got a '94 2 dr that didn't come with a tach in the cluster so what would be the easiest way to go about installing one?

I believe that you can swap in a different cluster as long as you get one with matching connectors.

I installed an aftermarket tach in an '85 Toyota, using some electronic knowledge and the factory schematic diagrams to figure out where to connect it.  If you have that knowledge or have a friend with it, that might be a reasonable way to go.

There's usually 3 or 4 wires you need to find when installing an aftermarket, power, ground, tach signal and illumination. Power, ground and illumination are at the radio, tach is in the engine bay, or behind the cluster in the connector.

It would be easier to replace your gauge cluster with a cluster that has a tach.Easy to do,and easy to find for cheap.JMO.

What clusters will work? Are there other 1994 models that have a tach or will a different year work?

The rare 1988.5-90 square vent CARBURATOR Tach dash can be made to work While the pilg is correct, the wiring is not the same.  You'll also need to ad in the VVS.  It's quite a bit of rewiring work on the dash cluster, but it can be done.  I have one in my 1994.

Otherwise, there is no factory tach option.  I bought mine new and I couldn't get one from the dealer.
