Question for the Oregon folks.
« on: November 11, 2008, 08:39:03 PM »
So I have been debating on moving up to Oregonfor the past few years.  I finally made it up and man do you folks have a beautiful state.  I'm from Colorado orginaly and thought that I had it good.  Great state campgrounds by the way.

On to the question, having read this forum for the past year or so it seems that moving up there will be a death sentence to my Tracker in tearms of rust.  I have a very clean truck right now and want to keep it that way.  Have any of you fine folks come up with some kind of maintaince to prevent this kind of thing.  Looking at the posts it seems that alot of the cancer comes from underneath.  Just wondering if there is any thing that I can do ahead of time to prevent this.  I have my Tracker built the way I want and the idea of it rusting out makes me a sad Panda.  Any tips or thoughts would be appreciated.

Saltwater works like road salt, it eats up your vehicle. If you keep it clean, you should not have any problems.
If you do a lot of beach driving or live along the coast, regular washing should be considered.
If you Can Not Do It Safely, It's Not Worth Doing!

What part of Oregon? I have lived here most of my life and have never had any vehicles with rust issues. We don't use salt on our roads.

Exactly the opposite. Western Oregon (anything west of the Cascades) is very easy on cars. In fact they get moss and mold but no rust. On the East side, you may have issues if you don't wash your car during the winter but they don't use salt. The state uses crushed cinder rock. Rinse that off and you'll be fine.

I live in central oregon and I haven't seen many vehicles from around here get much more than surface rust, asside from our international that has some slight rust through damage on the inside because it leaks... about the road salt, they have been using it around here for a while. I don't think it's hurt anything too badly yet, but I try to at least rinse off my rig avery now and then to keep it from rusting. I also shoot paint over scratched spots in the frame and stuff like that to try and keep it protected. I've been driving in the winter for 4ish years now with the same rig and it's doing just fine. I can't really speak for the rest of oregon though.

one thing I would keep in mind before moving here is all the trails that have been closed lately, one of the most popular areas to wheel is all closed unless posted open as of jan 08 and allot of places to snomobile have been closed off... it's pretty lame.

In the sierra nevada mountains, they also use volcanic ash/sand on the roads. It really doesn't cause rust (no more so than rain or water), but you can definitely tell who has been to the snow, as it makes cars very dirty. On the coast, cars tend to rust from the top down (the sun bakes the paint off, then the salt air rusts the exposed metal).

One thing to keep in mind is that the state is now spraying deicer on the roads I believe it is calcium chloride. It'll cause corrosion but not as bad as salt will as they don't use it to melt the snow just to help keep frost and ice from forming. They quit using it when there is rain or snow falling.

Thanks for all the input guys.  I am looking at the Portland area and I was worried about rust big time.  Probably wont be moving for close to a year, what I do for a living is pretty specailized.  But I wanted to get a jump on anything ahead of time.

I have been thinking about moving to Washington state, as a bunch of my friends from high school are living up there, as well as other people I know, and my cousin is considering moving up there to go to grad school up there. It probably wont be for a while (my cousin is probably moving there 2 years from now), but I definitely want to go up there and check it out. Right now, I am trying to save up to go work abroad (probably in Scotland as I have friends there) for a year.
