Lock-Right or Mini-Spool opinions please

Ok, all traces of the $600 trail beater are now obliterated... lol..

93 5 speed track,

bought 235x75 Buckshots (29's)  and a BDS 2" Suspention lift

Was SO impressed with the little truck, it got more attention to exhaust and other things it needed... (rust,paint...etc)

Got bit by the Zuki bug...   Just ordered a set of 31x11.50 LTB's on 15x8 'Crawlers..

I also made a deal for a set of 5.62:1 3rd members, WITH a lockright in the rear...


Here is the question:

I have a mini-spool sitting here.  I won't be street driving this thing MUCH, but I will some.

So, do I put the mini-spool in (I hate the idea of driveline lash, associated with the lockright)

and sell my 5.12's with the lockright? or Keep the lockrite and sell the 3rd's with the spool?


I trail ride mostly, tight twisty stuff, dirt hills, I want to do well at the Badlands too this summer..... ideally, I want an ARB, front AND rear... but the wallet ain't quite deep enough for that one yet...


I don't mind tire wear and squealing on it's limited road use.. I HATE LOUD NOISES from the driveline.. I hear Lockrights raise hell sometimes going into reverse...

I've got a NoSlip in the rear of my Ranger.  Granted it's got like 40" more wheel base, twice the hp, 33" tires, and the NoSlip is the Lock Right's "better manner'd younger brother" but that's a good question.  On my Ranger it will clunk and pop sometimes when I'm reversing, turning at slow speeds, or just when it's feeling funny and wants to scare me and/or bystanders.  It's been in there for about a year and a half and honestly, I forget it's there.  Pushes a bit in turns but nothing horrible.  It's kinda nice on slick road days to be able to just push in the clutch and coast through turns without much worry of the rear sliding out.

That said, for simplicity and predictability's sake the spool sounds nice.  I almost got one put into the rear when I had it regeared but decided on the locker due to peer pressure.  I'm still not sure if it was the right way to go.


I say run the locker in the pig as it is.  If you don't like it, put the spool in.  For your uses you shouldn't see much difference.  You won't be able to scare bystanders though.

Nothing makes unsuspecting people jump like a really loud, metallic CLANG! 8)

I intend to purchase & install a mini-spool into the rear of my Tracker, have used the Lock-rite in a different vehicle, did not like the on-road manners at all. Too much darting left & right. While the spooled diff will surely stress the axle shafts(I carry spares), it should be quiet and predictable, and give me the traction needed.

Just tested mine today...darting left and right...Thought I was just crazy....

Try 2 new tires of the same size,
all the left and right darting is torque
steer. You want interesting darting, try
it in a turbo Track/Kick on 235s  ;)

I'll get the tires,you  give me your turbo...LOL,The  tires on it  are the same size.Are you saying  that with new tires it will not do the torque steering..hows that???It's got stock tires right now.But I'm getting  31's

Hmm so you guys are recommending a locker for on road driving? I always heard a locker was better.

iv run both in all my trucks use what you have if it goes bad spool it . i have spools in the rear of all my trucks now with no problem. my 12 year old son drives a 90 track with 31 in tires and  a spool and he has never broke an axle or anything else for that matter with such a small tire

Good to hear.. it's the spool for sure for me.. the lockrite will come out and go with the 5.12's

ARB's when fundage allows (After crawler gears)


Funny you should mention your boys Track.. I almost bought my boy a Sammy today on ebay.. it went for $710.00... just a bit rich for what it was.... beater for sure..   BUT, My trailer won't hold two.. so he will have to wait.

What I was getting at is that even tho 2 tires
are the same size and brand, say 235/75-15
BFG ATs  they wear at different rates, depending
on where the tire was mounted, so you get 2 tires,
one from the back abd one that was from the front,
now you have 2 slightly different sizes, not much,
but with the locker, a tire that covers lets say 1/4"
more ground per revolution at a freeway speed of
ohh I dunno 60 MPH, RPM of about 3500 divide by
gears of 5.12 thats 684 revs per min, x our 1/4"
is over 14 feet per min more ground covered by that
one tire, that equals about 3 inches per second push
on one side. Normally this difference would be absorbed
by the spider gears, giving a little more to the other slower
tire, helping it to "keep up" with the faster tire, but with
no spider gears, because of the locker, it pushes harder
instead on only one side, giving you a squirrely ride, it's
a consistent one sided push too, same size tires push
equally on both sides, and the sideways action goes away.

My question was for a daily driver which do most of you guys prefer, locker or spool?

I would vote for the locker. Not a huge fan of mini-spools. I will be putting a locker in the rear of mine hopefully very soon. BTW, I drive about 52 miles a day in my Sami.

I would vote for the locker. Not a huge fan of mini-spools. I will be putting a locker in the rear of mine hopefully very soon. BTW, I drive about 52 miles a day in my Sami.

Yeah.. I don't think I would use a spool on something I drove everyday... 

Save up and get an ARB..   ;D
