Need help with 97' suzuki sidekick jlx

Since I got it, I've had random transmission problems. Its all shifting related. The first started with the spring in the shifter linkage actually breaking and me replacing the shifter with one from a junkyard.

Well occasionally it will not go into certain gears. For instance some days it takes a bit for it to go into reverse. I mean it just WONT go in, like its hitting a wall, but if I play with it for a bit it finally goes into gear

Sometimes while driving it wont go into 1st or 2nd, this happened once when I was downshifting from 4th. It went from 4th to 3rd no problem but trying to put it into 2nd or 1st just wasnt happening, this time I could move the shifter into 1st or 2nd position but the clutch was not attempting to engage a gear.

Currently it scratches really bad in 2nd, if I rev it higher in 1st it helps but I have to shove the thing into 2nd and make sure there is absolutely no slack at all for it to shift into gear. I can also feel it having trouble as it 'clicks' into second.

With this putting the shifter into 1st or 2nd feels strange, harder to do than any other gear, I feel strong friction. This also occurs when leaving 2nd gear, it feels like its grabbing at the shifter in 2nd as I shift to 3rd.

Also, switching from most of the gears, feels odd. Like the linkage is pushing past metal bars that are in the way(if this makes sense).

Well these are the main problems, I have never driven another manual so I dont have any experience with their maintenance but I know that I drive this vehicle correctly. I should note that I changed the fluid and added synthetic in hopes it would help but nothing has changed.

If anyone has any advice I'd greatly appreciate it, thanks!

i would first check that your clutch cable is adjusted up ok. how much free play does the clutch pedal have when you first push it down? i have seen springs break in the pressure plate of the clutch which will give you the same problems. otherwise it could be possible that the tranny has some internal failure.

as far as play in th pedal, it feels perfectly normal

it would seem as if its an internal problem but its confusing because nothing is consistant with it

like today it started driving a bit better, while still feeling funny shifting through gears but I had no troubles making it into any gears

its frustrating
