ABS woes?
« on: September 23, 2007, 02:51:29 PM »
Okay,
I've had a minor brake issue for some time.
Figuring it is because of Bigger wheels and added weight.
Swapped out to 4dr brakes- front and rear.
come to find out I'm not getting fluid pressure to the fronts.
New master cylinder
New front calipers
new rear wheel cylinder.

Now it has come down to be part of the ABS system.
SInce putting in the ARB locker in the rear, I had to remove the ABS ringgear
I Hate ABS.
I'm down to my last thought on this and thinking of removeing ANY ABS equiptment and
put in new hard lines.

Is there a year the tracker/Sidekicks didn't have ABS?

I believe this is the part that is giving me issues.

I'm going to try and get the system pressure bled.
if that doesn't work, I'll bypass that thingie.
And if I don't get it squared away by Oct 6.
I'll just have to drive my SX up there just to watch.

I'm not familiar with the ABS, it was never fitted over here. I'd be inclined to remove it as its not going to do anything without the ring gear. Whats the pedal travel like? I have heard of people having trouble with the flexi-lines collapsing internally and restricting flow, though I've never experienced that myself.

well, to be clear here ...

NONE of the 89-98 trac/kicks had ABS ...

BUT, many we're fitted with RWAL (Rear Weel Anti-Lock).

The RWAL system is sensenrd via a rear wheel speed ring in the diff AND a "load sensing" switch attatched to the diff.

If the speed ring sensor becomes a problem (broken, unhooked, etc) then the RWAL controller will throw a code.
IIRC, the "load sensor" can also cause a code.

The RWAL has it's own means for checking codes ... I'll look it up later this afternoon if you don't have a FSM.

just one more clarification ...

ABS is completely different than the RWAL ...

RWAL simply uses a proportional valve to "adjust" the rear wheel braking.
ABS will adjust braking depending upon wheel spin/lock (usually at each wheel independently).

They are COMPLETLEY different.

I assumed he meant RWAL. I posted a link a while back to some RWAL tech info.

My pedal hits the floor with little to no pressure.
I've bled the crap out the brakes
Everything is new except for the Thingy pic above.
Swapped that out of another kick.

Try isolating the problem. Clamp the rear flexi line and see if you get pressure. If not remove the rear brake line from the master cylinder (M10 x1.0 bolt) and plug the outlet to check that you then get pressure with only the front brakes in circuit.

Excepting the Sidekick "Sport" models of course. They had 4 wheel ABS. At least the 4 doors did. I just spent $125 on a new front wheel ABS sensor... :( and now I'm selling it. :(
