I just bought my first Samurai, need some help!
« on: January 28, 2011, 07:29:39 PM »
I just bought the following:

1987 sami tt, all toyota upgrades, toyota 22r engine, toyota trans and tcase, toyota axles 4:10s, toyota driveshafts, toyota steering gearbox, lowrange offroad hysteer kit, lifted yj leafs front and in rear, shackel reversal in frt, new windshield, lots of new parts, runs great, great offroad. Body cleand inside and out.

It was a good deal (I think) and I really like it so far, but I am new to the 4 x 4 world and especially Sami's.  Here are my questions:

1) I expected a bunch more power with this engine.  It seems to accelerate slow and tops out at about 55-60mph.  It also bogs down when climbing.  Is this normal, a tired motor, a poorly tuned motor, etc...?  The engine has 100k plus on it.
2) It currently has 32 x 11.5 x 15 tires.  They are bald.  In looking for replacements, I was thinking of going down a size or two for performance as this is as much of an around town car as it is a serious off road vehicle.  thoughts?
3) It is really, really noisy inside.  I know this comes with the territory, but is there any hope to quiet this thing down?
4) It has a tubular red what appears to be a cherry bomb muffler in line prior to a more traditional looking muffler before exiting the car.  I am confused why this would be done?
5) The speedo is not hooked up.  the previous owner said he could not locate an adapter to go from the sami speedo to the toyota cable.  Any thoughts?
6) The e-brake is not hooked up.  Is this a problem with connections again, or simply a needs to be connected issue?

Enough for now.  I appreciate any help!

I believe it is just the stock toyota trans gearing.

The gearing and tire size may be affecting the engine performance.

The Previous Owner may have the gearing set up for offroading so trying to drive it on the highway may be a bit disappointing.

Your first step is to find out more about the transmission gear ratios, the transfer case ratios and the ring and pinion ratios.

Solution 1 is to ask the Previous owner.

Solution 2 is to

------look up the stock ratios for the transmission (see ID information on the transmission itself)
------check the t-case ratios by comparing the input revolutions to ouput revolutons in 2-high and 4-low. This might require removing the t-case if it is not divorced.
------ count the input/output revs on either differential to get it's ratio.  Google something like determinating differentail gear ratio for instructons.
------research the 22r power band chart to see if it matches your gearing in terms of highway driving.

-------Report back here or use a gear ratio calculator (like this one : http://www.acksfaq.com/gearcalc-gen.php) to see if the gearing will allow the high-speed driving you are looking for.

Naturally, if the gearing does match your engine and your drivng desires, you probably need to find out why the engine won't provide the power.

I hope that this helps!

The 22r isn't known for being a particularly strong engine, just a nearly indestructible one.   You are also running a lot larger tires then stock, you might want to drop to 5.12 or lower in your axles.

I have had this truck a few weeks now and have found a ton of problems. Most are little things like shock mounts breaking, e-brakes not working, wheel bearings loose, calipers leaking, but my big problems are that there is no power going up hill. In 4th and 5th gear, I have no power. I am downshifting into 2nd and 3rd to climb modest hills on the open highway. I am also stalling when I come to a stop. This is not all the time, but intermittingly with no pattern. I took it to the mechanic today and they performed a compression check #1 and 4 were at 90, #2 was 120 and #3 was 150 They also found that the electric choke was never hooked up. They suggested two things: adjust valves & wire in a choke. Simple enough and they are going to tackle these things on Tuesday next week, but I am thinking of doing the work on it this weekend. Wondering if anyone out there has any advice? Never wired a choke, but I have wired a couple VW kit cars from scratch, so I think I am up for it. Advice on where to run it from? Also, will adjusting the valves really bring the compression up that much? Any thoughts would be great in helping this newbie to Toyotas.

Thanks!
