Just wanted to pop in and greet everyone here. and i did have a really stupid question.. How do i engage the 4WD? do i lock the hubs, put in nutral then shift into 4H/4L or do i put in nutral shift into 4H/4L then lock the hubs?

This is my first 4WD car i wanted to do it right and get something light and cheap to work on..

next stop is trying to get the thing at least up to 80hp if i can.. 60-65 max speed is a little hard on the freeway.

Howdy
Find yourself some lonely loose gravel road or gravel parking lot. At a full stop put the trans in nuetral parking brake on get out and turn the inner ring of your front hubs from the free to the locked position. Jump back in fasten seat belts and pull the t-case rearward move to the right and up you should see a 4wd light come on the dash. Release parking brake.Do not attempt to drive at high speeds your ablility to steer and correct your course will be greatly affected. Full lock turns may be difficult try Hi and Lo pos this does not mean Hi speed or Lo speed it refers to the gear ratio. When you decide to terminate excersize do not forget to turn your hubs to the free position they can and will get hot after driving. Go slow you will probably feel some steering wheel jerky motion this is to be expected.
As far as the 80+ MPH good luck I think everyone on the board would like to hear about that.
I think I did seventy somethin with a tail wind tucked in behind a Peterbuilt once.

Thanks i know it was a total new guy question. i know not to try and engage it on dry pavment and not to just drive around everywhere in 4WD.

i was asking for around 80 HP i really don't care about hitting 80 MPH.

So far i really like the sammy i was a suzuki parts and service guy for a bit and got to see some really kick ass rigs.

Did not mean any insults just trying to help. As for the 80+ mph I have experienced one or two of the Florida based Lightning conversions and they will flat get r done. It is just a different end of the spectrum. FYI do you have the yellow sheet in the carpet below the shift lever it goes in great detail of how to shift and lock hubs. Enjoy

Nope i did not thats why i ended up asking.. i knew what needed to be done to put the car into 4WD i just dident know the order in weach to do it.

no insult taken i would rather someone be too detailed then not detailed enough. once i take care of a few problems *with negitive temps out here at the moment havent been too excited to go out and work on it* i will be taking it out first chance i get..

Your supposed to unlock the hub's? ??? Mine are usually locked as some sort of wheelin is only minutes away. If I know that I will only be driving the streets for a while I might unlock them for fuel economy and it does help drop some of the vib's from the front end.

I never knew that hubs heated up in the locked position. Isn't there more movement in the hub in the free position?

Not wanting to ruffle any feathers, just curious.

Thanks for the input on everything gents the 1.6 may be a posability in the future. i used the 4WD today for the first time and jesus christ this thing crawls through snow like no tomarrow.

i love my Sammy :-D its everything i had hoped it would be..

hi i had a uk 92 sammy over here in scotland and had it through 4 foot snow drifts totally stock with worn rear tyres they are great and the fastest i got out of mine was 91 mph down a big hill scary as hell though!!!!! do 80 on the flat just takes a while getting there.
