How much of the exterior can be done with a gallon of Herculiner?
« on: September 02, 2006, 07:29:58 PM »
Doing my '96 Tracker either tomorrow or Monday.  How far can I go with a gallon?

I'm planning on at least up to the body line,  some of the leading edge of the hood, around the wheel wells, uhm...maybe the bumers, probably not...

I have done this a few times with good results. A gallon should do your whole Tracker. I did up to the body line one one of my XJ's and it turned out great. I highly recommend you spray it with a schutz gun at about 35-40 psi. You can roll it, but it is way easier when you sray it, and you will get a more even coat. I'll be doing the rockers on my tracker within the next week or so.

Here are some pics:

I also sprayed the bed of my dad's truck...

Here is the texture up close...

The bed of that truck looks as good as my
brothers truck that he had Rhinolined, the
Rhino stuff is starting to fade slightly, but
with the stuff you are supposed to put on
it, I'm sure it will look like new again, it's
been  on for about 18 Mo.

I'm planning on hitting it with the UV-protectant coat that Herculiner sells when it starts to fade.  Maybe sooner.  Just can't find any right now in town so I'll have to order it and wait on it.

whats the point of spraying the exterior with herculiner? does it prevent rust better than paint? do you spray it over the paint, or in place of the paint? if its worth the time and effort, i might spray my kick.

might help with rust i dunno but i used some on my rocker pannels beacause its alot more durable then paint. when you hit something with the rocker it bends and the paint chips but the liner bends with whatever you have it put on.

Scratch resistance, dent resistance (mildly), hides ugly paint and body work, prevents rust by sealing the metal, covers rust, prevents rust from spreading if you put something like POR-15, Chassis Saver, or Rust Encapsulator on the rust and then spray/apply bedliner to it, and others...

Okay, very important note here! It is VERY important that you prep the area to be sprayed properly. If you don't...it won't stick. You must scuff the area thoroughly and clean it after with Xylene (or similar product). you can't have any smooth or glossy/shiney areas.

Your bedliner is only as good as your prep, period.

More pics:

The Jeep was done with hippoliner (two part urethane/epoxy coating):

http://www.smitsgroup.co.nz/hippo-liner.cfm

On the truck, I used Duplicolor (One part urethane premix) I prefered the hippoliner , although the Duplicolor was easier with no mixing. This kit come with the roller, pan, gloves, tape, 1 gallon bedliner, 1 pint bedliner, and 1 aerosol. (do not use the aerosol for your bedliner, it is too thin and smooth. It works well for spraying the rockers if you like the smooth look, but that's about it.(see pics of the red truck),  If you want durability, use the schutz gun.

How to video:

I used a schutz gun to spay it on with. (Note: you will need to puchace the cans seperately from a body supply shop.) DO NOT FORGET TO WEAR A RESPORATOR

I hear you on the prep.  I plan on brushing/rolling it on.  A few years ago a buddy did the bed of his Ranger with Herculiner...but I know for certain he didn't prep it well and he only used one coat.  Well, before too long it was peeling and then it faded.  You could scratch it off with a stick.  Duh.
Despite applying it completely incorrectly and the fading being something Herculiner themselves mention he was completely disappointed with the product and recommends against it to EVERYONE. ::)

Hippoliner, eh?  Saw it in New Zealand once but never here in the States.  I just got my gallon kit of Herculiner for $80 at Menards so I'm happy.  Magnet Paints has a bedliner in the works that sounds interesting and has a comprehensive application process but it's REALLY still in the works...and sounds like it will be for a while.

Did you guys sand your metal or just use the scratch pads they provide?  If you did sand, what sand paper did you use?

They used to carry Hippoliner here at Canadian Tire, but they replaced it with Duplicolor. I'm looking around for it.

You can scuff it, or sand it down to bare metal if you waqnt...grit does'nt matter as the liner will hide the imperfections.

Don't think I'm going to get the 'liner on today.  Just the rust busting has taken all morning.  Bit behind schedule.  There was a wee bit more rust on the front fenders than I had thought. :P

Got some new drainholes down there though... :P

The Canadian Tire here in NS has a spray bay for rhino liner, I'm considering it in my truck, was thinking of getting them to spray, but didn't know there was a do-it-yourself kit. Is it just as good?
