Hood Scoop

Used this afternoon to put a hood scoop on my Tracker.  It's rather disconcerting to take the hood off your vehicle, mark it up, drill holes then cut into it with a jig saw, but I think the end result is worth it.

And yes, I know it's a hair off-center.  It's because of the construction of the hood (or at least that's my story and I'm stickin to it.)

If you're wondering about the brand of the hood, I don't really know.  It was $5 on E-Bay.  Wan one of the only ones I could find that claimed it could be made functional.

your vehicle looks to be fuel injected.  is the air run thru the air intake system?  better performance?  I read that some zukis came with a turbo diesal and factory hood scoop sold only outside the United States. l

I took the factory air box out and stuck a cone filter on the end of the intake manifold.  The air from the scoop is just directed down over the top of the engine to help flush hot air out from under the hood.  Hopefully that will boost power a little bit by keeping the air that the cone sucks in a little cooler.

I used the space where the factory air box was to mount an aftermarket cruise actuator.

Yep, originally fitted to clear the Mazda 2ltr TD lump, it was also fitted on the later petrol models, like mine.

What about just drilling a lot holes, instead of making the entire cut-out? Would that be enough?

I like the looks of the square scoops on the Track, and I see there a bunch of aftermarket ones available. My fear is that quality-wise, they look kind of cheap, and if you had to replace it in the future, I wouldn't want to be a slave to that exact same cut-out, know what I mean?

I just did a search and read that muddy water intake into the scoop can be a problem. Also the fact that it may not even do anything to help performance.

No offfroading for me, but we get a lot of RAIN. So is this a good idea for my truck?

If NOT, what about just sticking it on for looks, no holes or cutout at all?

Well, I wasn't all that worried about muddy water since I don't off-road.  My primary concern is that my engine always feels like a nuclear reactor mid-meltdown after a long drive, even though my temp gauge says everything is fine.  These little engines just radiate a lot of heat, so my primary concern was getting more airflow through the engine compartment.  Have yet to make a long drive yet, so I don't kow how much difference it will make.

(My tracker is my daily driver until I get the engine in my Aztek reassembled.  I love odd vehicles.)

I think if I was going to do a scoop, I'd do a cowl induction ... would help draw hot air out of engine compartment at speed, yet not capture dust/mud/etc when wheelin'

I'm kind of in the same situation--it's my daily drive, no off-roading.

Plus, it's HOT in South Florida, so how could getting more air flow in there hurt?

We threw some vents made by Davesport on the top of a Sammy that was getting a little hot under the hood with the VW Fuel Injection swap.  They fit right on the hood and vent out a ton heat.

Sadly we don't actually have any pictures of them installed.  :p

I did hood vents to help cool the engine compartment after the turbo install. Doesn't seem to be any problem in rain or off road, and they work very well.

I put this small - universal - hoodscoop on my Sammie after putting on the Weber. It was just a little behind where the airfilter sits, to improve airflow from front to back of the enginecompartment. I put it on backwards to prevent rain and crap from blowing in and to have the best flow past the airfilter.



Now I've got Fuel Injection the airfilter is in a different place ( snorkel not attached yet ), but I kept it anyway, looks nice I think  ;)

I'll make a call, but what were the dimensions of the ones you put in? I'm guessing you put in two?

Seems like an easy, inexpensive upgrade with some real benefits.

It can be BRUTALLY hot down here, and even without taxing the engine all that much at all, we're talking heavy heat build-up. That extra air getting to the engine sounds like it can only be a good thing.
