Hood scoop question.

I've noticed that diesel GV's have a hood scoop.  My Tracker is gasoline, so it has no scoop.  But I have been bitten by the custom sheetmetal bug again....time for an external air intake! Here's a picture of a Grand Vitara TDI

If a vehicle is equipped with a hood scoop, doesn't water get in? What stops water from getting in the engine?  The air filter?  

Any info would be appreciated.

its probably a turbo intercooled diesel so the scoop is to get air through the intercooler, similar to the scoop on the hood of new subarus. Not direct path to the air intake.
1991 4 door kick, 2" coil spacers, 30" Coopers, winch, locker, rust, dents, etc.

If its the same as my Vitara then its only there because the diesel engine is taller than the petrol. Its not connected to the intake at all. That one is further back than the one on mine (old Trac/Kick shape). On mine its a real PITA, as the front dips down into water and the water comes up over the bonnet/hood it directs all the muddy sludge that passes for water at an off road site right over the top of the engine and alternator.

Skip the hood scoop and go for a snorkle. I think that looks better and it's more functional. also on the subaru's with hood scoops that don't have turbo the scoop is just for looks as there is a piece of plastic blocking off the engine bay.
but if you wanted a hood scoop just for looks you could put one in then cap it off under the hood. Or you could put a microfiber filter that would block most of the big debri coming into the engine bay.
But hey what do I know  ;D ;D

I looked at transplanting one in to Mudfkr a few years back. Most of the feed back I got on the motor which by the way is a re-badged Mazda (for the earlier one, and I think a re-badged Peugeot for the later ???) was not good. Alot of comments like cracked heads, weak internals etc and most of the information was from a wrecker that specializes in Suzuki's so that kinda put me off. If you'd like the engine model to see if you can find one locally let me know  and I'll get it for you.    

Back on subject that scoop sits directly above the inter-cooler, from memory there is a small rubber seal between the hood scoop and the inter-cooler but nothing to stop water and crap getting down on to the motor.

You are correct. That's how the intercooler gets its cooling air.

Why not just go to an auto parts store and get one of those hood scoops that stick on with 3-M two sided tape. JC-Whitney also has some nice ones. Just mark out where you want to place it because once you stick it on your stuck with it. Trying to remove it may take your paint off to.
