Offroading in SW Ark. (kind of long)
« on: March 15, 2004, 01:05:40 PM »
Well, the Track held up nicely.  We spent the weekend before last in Little Rock.  Four of us rode down in the Track and met up with a Jeeper buddy down at the ORV park in Hot Springs.  Only real problem was climbing the steeper trails in 4high.  The Track actually completely stalled out midway up an incline.  Never had that happen...not a good feeling either.  I had to drop it into 4low and she managed to climb on up.  I've really lost some power climbing with the larger tires (30s).  Only other problem is it appears to have blown a leak around the Xfer case and rear differential.  Had fluid slung all on the undercarriage right around the Xfer case.  What caused it was we got a bit cocky towards the end of the day and hit a trail meant for rigs with 32s and lockers.  Tracker still held its own though.  Slid around and wedged between a good size rock in front and a tree in back on an incline.  I shut her down while we worked on getting the jeep up.  Finally jumped back in, fired her up, and climbed right over the rock.  Further up the trail the jeep lost traction.  In fact, I have a rather nice picture of the Tracker tugging the jeep back to the top of the hill!
Long post to ask...What is the best way to get my climbing power back and how much will it cost me?  Thanks again,
J

 www.ottindustries.com kicker3.
I think that is the only thing that I can say. If you go through that option, you can get 14% reduction in high, which means you don't have to worry about changing the gears in the axles and you end up with 3 low ranges! The kicker3 is only $600 plus shipping. Hell, you would be way more into either the t-case gears for the kick case, or the lower diff gears!

Thanks idaho.  I think I just read another of your posts talking about this setup.  Very interesting.
Few questions though:  Is this bolt on or will modifications be necessary to fit this under a tracker (do I see two Xcase shift levers?)?
Also, what type of experiences do you (or anybody else that has this setup) have with the install and performance on the trail?  Keep in mind I'm somewhat new to these mods.

My club is going there next weekend to ride. But I will not be able to go (trying to get everything done in time to go to Moab). Hopefully I can make it next time,

Now to your question. You did say that it still does fine in 4-Low didn't you? Why would you want to spend lots of $'s when you can just pull it back into 4 low for the steep climbs? Are you manual or auto? If your auto you can cheaply lower the axle gearing by switching out gears from a 5 speed.

Lose the 1.8:1 factory low range, and put in the Calmini 4.24:1 low range.

Thanks Pilot,
Its an auto and yes it did ok after dropping to 4low, but it seemed to really die towards the top of the hill like it lost most of its power.  I was thinking that changing the gearing would help get some of the "pep" back.
It will be a project when the $ become available...if the gearing would make a difference.  I plan to go up to a 32" or so tire next time around anyway.  I was expecting to regear at some point, but I'm just a bit unsure of the best way to accomplish getting the pep back.
Thanks again,
J

Yea, you will definately need more gearing if your going to 32's. I have been most impressed with the T-case reductions for off roading but running 33's, I have the 4:1 and the 5.83 axle gears. It does great. OTT did not have their dual set up when I did mine but there are alot of people putting it in right now. In a little while you will be able to find out how good everyone likes it. It sounds like a sweet set up.
