Slushbox conversion
« on: April 24, 2005, 06:08:53 AM »
I've just picked up a complete 90 Tracker 4WD with an auto for little $$...I'll be swapping the auto into my 92 Sunrunner...should be a fun project and was a lot less $$ than swapping out the rearend to a 12 bolt and 5.83's front and back. Once the auto is in I'll be looking for some 31" tires to equalize the gearing...more to follow as the project gets underway.

I've been pretty happy with 31's+5.12's+automatic. The slushbox has some disadvantages, but you get a nice torque conversion  ;)

forgot to add ... when you put in the auto make sure you have a tranny cooler. It'll be workin hard, and would suc to cook it.

Thanks SnoFalls, a tranny cooler was on my list of things to get...especially as I'll be towing a small trailer with it as well.

My neighbor came over to look at the donor vehicle and the first thing he said was "lets tub it and drop in my 406 SB" ;)

The trans cooler will need air too. Some of those "fins on a pipe" won't cut it when your crawling at 2 mph.

Your donor should have a trans cooler in with the rad ... use it.

Also ... Istall a drain plug in the tranny pan. You'll have the pan off (or should) to put in a new filter. Changing fluid/filter without a drain is not fun. I dropped the pan, and didn't do a plug. I know I'l regret it next time.

Yes the donor rad has the built in cooler.

Once I pull the tranny out I'll be taking it to a shop to get the internals checked out and get it serviced before installing it in my Sunrunner. Thanks for the "plug" tip, I'll be doing that as well :)
