16v motor faster without acc's???
« on: February 12, 2004, 03:25:43 AM »
so i needed to make an emergency run to Chicago from Detroit the other day to help my sister.  on the trip home i heard a noise that sounded....well it's NOT something you WANT to hear coming from under the hood while driving on the highway, let's just put it that way (LOL)

so i go to pull over and whoops, that's when i find out i no longer have power steering.  i get to a gas station and i open the hood.  my entire accessory belt is off and one of the plastic pulleys (not sure if it's the one for the power steering or A/C) not only snapped off but was shredded and all jammed up in the main drive belt.  I got the pulley free and took the accessory belt out

but when i got back out on the highway i noticed something wierd....the tracker felt night and day difference in acceleration.  this sucker was flying!

suddenly with that belt gone my little tracker had major balls.  am i imagining this or can someone back up this claim?  and if so who makes a performance underdrive pulley for the track/kick...becaus i like the gained feeling of power but love my power steering and A/C just as much.

I took out my entire A/C system (pump,  lines, belt, hoses) from my Jimny figuring it would at least help fuel milage a hair. I haven't really noticed anything. Then again it was just A/C, I had no power steering to begin with.

Hey Joker,

I am looking for a complete A/C system. Are you looking to sell yours? If so how much would you want for it? I can send you my non AC dash control in trade to I will have a complete set to give my mechanic and you will still have air control.

The motor is the same bottom end. as far as I can tell you but They do make the underdrive pulley for the 16 Valve.

Well to test the claim of more power, I put my sons 94 Tracker 1.6 8valve on the dyno and it made 62.7 rwhp peak. I removed the power steering belt and it made 70.2 rwhp peak. I have a 94 also with no power steering and put mine on the dyno and made 69.8 rwhp. Neither of us have A/C to test what horsepower we lose when it is on.

an almost 10hp gain is pretty significant i think for just removing the power steering, i think i just might have to sell mine to a sammy owner and start workin' out to beef up my arms so i can have more POWER! ha ha ha

OK, so someone's going to have to come up with a A/C clutch type pully.  So that when you go to WOT the ass's belt will stop rotating.  Then as soon as the let off they will come back on.

Of course you'd have to have a timer for those who hold the pedle down "ALL" the time.
