Help! Suzuki Samurai (SJ80) jerking, stalling
« on: November 01, 2015, 04:47:00 AM »
Hello everyone.  I am a student in St. Kitts studying so I have very limited access to a good mechanic.  There are local mechanics but none of them have been trained correctly and I have had no luck with figuring out what is wrong with my Samurai.  It is a 1997 Suzuki Samurai "coily", right side drive so I believe it was either imported to the island from Japan or Australia.  I have been having trouble with my Samurai for a little while but it has been progressively getting worse.  It used to run rough in the mornings only after sitting for several hours (noticed especially after it rains, but of course it rains overnight all the time here so it is hard to tell).  After driving it for a few minutes it would run normally and give me no problems.  Lately it has been significantly worse to work through those first few minutes and I am worried to keep driving it in its condition.

This is a typical day driving it lately:
-starts up fine, idles between 1 &2 but you can hear the idle rising and falling.  put it in reverse out of my driveway and it tends to bog down/stall some days unless i rev my engine and force it to keep going.
-driving down the road, in low gear tends to be ok at first, unless going up hill or shifting to second.. then it struggles like it isn't getting enough gas.  bogs down, tries to stall, has gotten consistently worse bc i used to be able to just push it through that but now it has begun to buck/jerk forward and i can hear a clicking sound underneath my hood on the right hand side as it struggles.  if i shift down to 1st or let off my gas it can recover.
-after about 5 minutes of driving i can feel it start to smooth out and drive normally.  lately it has taken longer.  kind of still feel like when driving it is not going as fast as it should in 5th gear.
-fumes from my engine exhaust make my clothes smell like gas.  an auto shop on island said i did not have an exhaust leak but that is all they checked for.  local mechanic said that i was mistaken and that it was an oil leak that i am smelling but i am not convinced of that.

through searches I have suspected fuel pump or maybe carburetor.  My local mechanic said he has cleaned out the carb in the past, and i might need a carburetor repair kit.  I was hoping i could get some advice from you guys.  I am not a car-savvy person but I am leaving the island soon and have to sell the car and would like to at least have an idea of what is going on with my Sammy.  Thanks everyone

Do you have a carb or is it EFI? can you post a picture of what it looks like under the bonnet?

From what you're saying, when the engine has a load on it is the only time it bogs. Sounds like something is just coming to the end of its life (wearing out). What is the mileage on it? Has it ever had a tune up? If the carb has been cleaned before AND you smell like gas, could be a sign of the carb not being properly rebuilt. An oil leak wouldn't cause this type of concern, cause when there's no oil bad things happen and you're collecting pieces of  your motor off the highway. Without being able to see, hear, and feel what's happening it's difficult to accurately narrow down what components could be the cause of your problem. It could very well be getting too much fuel instead of not enough. In which case your carb would be the first place to check. Or it could be that your engine is misfiring when under a load sending the unburnt air/fuel mixture out the exhaust. If it was my vehicle, I'd want to inspect the plugs for excessive plug gap first since they are easy to get out.
But what is the mileage on your vehicle? Most vehicle should have a basic tune up (spark plugs, plug wires, and induction service) every 100k miles, that's usually about how long spark plugs last with mild to medium driving habits.

Hey
I'm a student on St. Kitts. I've had my SJ80 for almost two years on the island and she's been great. I'm literally have word for word the problem you had. It's definitely the fuel system and i'm thinking its the mechanical fuel pump. What was your end result?
your fellow coily Sj80,
Steph
