My Escudo runs on stock 1.6L 16V, auto tranny, Toyota axles (5.71 ratio), and 32� tires. When used on off road (mostly sand and mud here in Philippines) 4low is just about right except when facing inclines like the one in photo.



What can I do to increase power? I was thinking of the rockcrawler from calmini or but I’m afraid that it might be geared too low (134% lower than stock) since we don't do rockcrawling here. With the rockcrawler gear on 4L, is running on 2nd gear like running on 1st without it?

I have the same concern with the low range gears,
but I find I use 1st gear for the climbing stuff, granted
I'm running turbo and all, but I figured if I were to have
a lower T-case set, I could always use 2nd or 3rd for the
climbs, and still have a low rockcawler gear for the steep

That is the same way I look at it. Just start out in 2nd or 3rd on low range. With your current set up you have a crawl ratio of 37:1 that means that your 1st gear/low does about 15 MPH|removethispart|@6000 RPM. IF you go to the 4.24:1 low gears you will have a crawl ratio of 88:1 and 1st/low will now do about 6 MPH|removethispart|@6000 RPM. 3rd/low will be close to your present 1st/low. Doing the math on it all right nowin  5th/low |removethispart|@ 6000 rpm you could do about 69 MPH but with the 138% reduction it would only be able to hit 29 MPH at that RPM.

6000 RPM with 1.81:1 Low Gears will yield 15/28/40/55/69 MPH (15 in reverse)

6000 RPM with 4.24:1 Low Gears will yield  6/12/17/23/29 MPH (6 in reverse)

my problem is that im running on auto tranny and i cant select which gear to use. will this be a problem?

Umm, put it in low on the auto trans.  Unless I'm wrong that locks the transmission in 1st gear.

Granted I've never seen the shifter on an overseas Suzuki but every auto trans I've ever seen has something like OD, D, 2, 1 (or L), etc.  Just put it in the 1 or L position and you should be in 1st and staying there.

I'm running the auto tranny with the 4.24 t-case gears and find that it works awesome for climbing. If I'm in a situation where I need momentum I simply let the tranny upshift. I can only do about 40km/h flat out in drive though. I'm running the 8v motor with 5:13 gears and 34" tires
