96-98 Sidekick/Tracker Front Diff Pics??
« on: August 19, 2008, 07:31:11 PM »
Does anyone out there have pics of the internals of a 96-98 1.6L Sidekick or Tracker front diff.  I need to compare to 1999+ Grand Vitara, because I'm having the air actuator removed and going with the older diff setup.  I have alll the internal parts, but they're not together.  Thanks in advance.

Are the parts out of the Third member or is the third member just out of the housing??

Here's some drawings of the Air Front Diff, old one is similar

I put the whole front diff from a '98 (1.8L) and its perfect.  I used the '99 top brackets and the '99 cross member bracket.  My Tracker is a '99 so the housing is Aluminium anyways, no benifit to keep the old one.

Of course you have to follow the rest of the instructions for the S-O-T-F removal.

Basically, the 1997 Sidekick 5.125 ring and pinion was put into my 1999 GV and everything else was left alone, so I still have the rest of the Sidekick internals.  Since my actuator is defective, and makes constant banging noises when in 4wd, it needs to come out.  It's done this since the truck was new, and while Chevy issued a bulletin on it, Suzuki never did.  By rights, it should be replaced by the factory!  Oh well.....Anyway, hopefully it'll be easy to remove the actuator parts, replace them with whatever I have left over from the Sidekick, plug the air lines, and create the hybrid CVs.  Not too excited about the whole operation....but I'll be glad when it's done.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to get rid of the air diff altogether.  One less thing to malfunction.

The reason I have the air parts is that I just installed 5.83 r&p gears and an ARB locker into a Vitara steel pinion housing. So I know that  the Tracker parts will just bolt in just fine.
