hcgalvin....a  question about gearing

I was just looking at your website after someone suggested it to me. My nephew is wanting to get back into a 4x4 (sold his Sammy a couple yrs back). He wants a 4dr Track/Kick now. So it looks like I am building basically what you already have (thanks for the blueprints ;D)
I was wondering what you are doing for gears in the Toyota axles?
Looks like I will be using YJ springs, and Toyota mini truck axles, running 33 inch tires. So it will be geared too high, and with 5.12s in there already(or 5.38s? I heard the 4 drs have them) I can't find gears for the axles to go much lower. I can't justify the $$ to buy the t-case gears.
My thought right now is to run 5.71s in the axles, and them maybe a home made Kicker 3 type dual t-case set up to get the deep gearing for some rock crawling action.
Anyone else can feel free to chime in on this if you have some ideas

If you run a Sammi case as a dual, you won't need the 5.71's as the Kick 5.12's and a 1.4:1 (40% improvement) high range in the Sammi case would see you good, actually you could look at 34 or 35's along with the low range options. The driveline angles in a 4dr will be fine. have a look at these sites for some ideas.

We will probably stick with the 4.11s through the summer,  we have 35s for tires,  then if/when we go 37s-ish, we'll probably go 4.88s or 5.36s.

We are trying to see if we can get some of the highway gearing back into our truck, as with the 5.12s and the Sammy case we were running like 5500rpm at 75mpg with 33s.  (Plenty O Power, not enough gear)

We upgraded to 35s in the mid-term and are going to try the 4.11s, but if they aren't enough, then we'll go to 4.88s.  If we stick with 35s.  

If we go 37/38 for tires, then we'll probably go 5.36s.

So what is the tire diameter on a stock Trak/Kick??
I would like to get away with just axle gearing if possible.
He has his heart set on straight axles. I am also on a time limit...so I wonder about the logistics of getting the work done to the cases to get them attached quick enough.
This thing also has to make some 30 mile road trips so highway speed would be nice.

4.10(toy gears) X 1.409(sammy case) = 5.776
27(stock kick tire) X 5.776 = 155.952

155.952 / 5.12(stock manual tranny kick gears) = 30.459
155.952 / 4.62(stock auto tranny kick gears) = 33.755

4.10 is Just enough gears for 30" tires with a manual tranny, and 33" with an auto tranny...well you will need lower R&P's.

4.56 X 1.409 = 6.425
27 X 6.425 = 173.475

173.475 / 5.12 = 33.88
173.475 / 4.62 = 37.548

4.56 For 33" tires with a manual tranny and 37-38" tires with an auto tranny!

4.88 X 1.409 = 6.87
27 X 6.87 = 185.49

185.49 / 5.12 = 36.228
185.49 / 4.62 = 40.149

Go with 4.88 if you want to turn your 35-36" tires with a manual tranny and 40" tires with an auto tranny.

5.29 X 1.409 = 7.45
27 X 7.45 =201.15

201.15 / 5.12 = 39.287
201.15 / 4.62 = 43.538

And 5.29 For 38-39 tires with manual tranny and 44" tires with an auto tranny!!!! :o

And for suzuki R&P's (with sammy T-case)...

4.62(stock auto tranny kick gears)X 1.409(sammy t-case)= 6.5
27(stock kick tires) X 6.5 = 175.5

175.5 / 5.12 = 34.277
175.5 / 4.62 = 37.987

4.62 for 33-34-35" tires with a manual tranny, and 37-38" tires with an auto tranny

5.12 X 1.409 = 7.214
27 X 7.214 = 194.778

194.778 / 5.12 = 38.042
194.778 / 4.62 = 42. 159

5.12 for 38" tires with a manual tranny and 42" tires with an auto tranny.

For stock sidekick/tracker now(without sammy t-case).

manual tranny:

5.83(clamini gears) X 27"(stock tire size) / 5.12(stock r&p's) =  30.74

Good for 30-31" tires.

Auto tranny:

5.12 X 27 / 4.62 = 29.922

Good for 29-30" tires

5.83 x 27 / 4.62 = 34.071

Good for 34 tires!

So if I am running a standard kick tranny/t-case, mated to a 4:16 sammy t-case, and toy 4:10 axles,  I should be hitting highway speeds decent with 33's???

What tire size would be perfect using stock sammy t-case in above example???


Also, has anyone done a homebrew kicker 3????   I want to steal the blueprints.   8)

What all is involved in a home brew kicker 3 set up???

I'm still running a Kicker 3 behind a manual kick tranny with a 16 valve and FJ80 axles with 4.10 gears, and 35" tires. I have to slip the clutch a little at lights, but for the most part don't have too many problems. I can cruise on the freeway at 65-70. Granted, the freeway travel I take around here is pretty flat.

33's would be an improvement in speed and gearing over what I currently have.

I would imagine if I had an automatic, I'd get a little more low end, and not lag so much at lights.

I'm planning to put 6:1's in the sammy case before Moab next year. Hopefully the % increase in high will make things all nice and comfortable for me. This is easier than putting gears in these axles.

My truck is STILL my daily driver. It still takes me back and forth to work, and to errands and skiing, and offroading, and everything else.

here's a link to a home brew one, I know there was another (Gonzalo Bravo) that made a cool post with pictures on how he made his, but I can't seem to find it.

On a side note, those of you with manual sidekick trannies and the kicker 3 setup, do you get any vibration, or noise? (esp. coasting?)
