Try going from 5th gear or the one that is next to reverse to get the gears stopped from rotating first! then shift fast into reverse.

mine did that when cold badly. I went to synthetic gear oil for the tranny and now shifts much better. Only when really cold,(like now), I need to put into first, then it snicks right in reverse smoothly.

Nope, not always, a little draging
of the clutch disk on the flywheel
or pressure plate will cause the
trans to rotate the gears. This is
so bad in semi trucks that there
is a clutch brake to stop the trans
so you can put it in gear, most semi
truck trans have no syncros to help
speed up or slow down the gears so
the driver has to do it with the engine
RPM before slipping into the next gear.
;)

Enjoy your syncro trans, I drive a truck
for a living and have to match RPM for
every gear change I make, all day long.

also the weight of the tranny fluid when cold will turn the parts inside of your tranny.   lata stu
