another one on the topic of sway bars
« on: November 06, 2005, 06:57:03 AM »
hey guys, i've been studying the idea of removing my sway bar, and i think i want to do it... the problem is, i like to drive like a maniac on the streets... ok, not like a maniac, but i do drive aggressively... i've seen a quick disconnect made for a jeep i believe, and all you do was drill a hole through the bolt, and stick a clevis pin through it or something.... but i don't know what they did about the middle section...  i know its pretty easy to remove it anyway, but i'm one of those "impulse offroaders".... i'll just be driving around, and if i happen to see a good spot to try out, i'll try it... i don't really plan this kind of stuff...  any advice?  i like the solid feel on road, but i would like more flex off-road.... i'm afraid if i remove it, i'm gonna forget about it when i'm in a hurry to get somewhere, and flip over because of the way i'm used to driving...  should i just leave it on and forget about it?

The sway bar doesnt do much, with it removed I could still slide my stocker sideways and not roll.  Why not take a few minutes and remove it, it is just a few bolts, and take it for a spin.  If it is unacceptable then put it back on....

If you're driving a Track/Kick then be very careful after you remove the swaybar. When i took mine off with my original 2" spring lift the handling was noticably much worse. You can adapt to it but it does mean driving a fair bit slower. I fitted some 1 1/2" wheel spacers and the handling was returned pretty much back to stock. The stiffer your springs are the less effect disconnecting it will have.

I took the sway bar off the GV a few months ago.  Around corners you can feel a bit of lean but really that's it, just a bit.  Nothing drastic.  It's my wife's daily driver and I told her if she didn't like it or ever felt unsure because of it to let me know.  It's been several months and she doesn't mind it at all.  The only thing she said was it rides better.  She's right as by removing that direct link from your suspension to your frame you get rid of vibrations that would have bipassed your shock absorbers/struts/dampeners.

Frankly I've taken them off the last 4 4x4's I've owned and a few friends' trucks and no one has complained or had problems.

I took mine off of both of my Trackers and never missed them at all. On the one rolling on 33's I have a little bit more body roll in the turns, but it's totally manageable, predictable and nowhere near flipping...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

MY SAMMY HANDLED JUST ABOUT THE SAME WITHOUT IT.  THEY ARE SPRUNG SO STIFF IN STOCK FORM THAT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO DOO MUCH WORK.  EVEN WITH A 5.5" LIFT AND 31x12.5" TIRES MY TRUCK HANDLES GREAT...THE ADDED WIDTH DOES HELP THOUGH

well, i decided i was gonna try it, and wouldn't ya know all my tools dissappeared!  i've got half a million sockets and screw drivers... but not the first wrench or ratchet that would fit!!  because of this, i also can't remove the back seat, like i want....

but anyway, when i finally do find my tools or buy some more, isn't there a rear sway bar too?  would removing this one make any more difference, or has anyone tried it?  i'm assuming there's a rear, because every vehicle i've ever heard of has a rear, PLUS, calmini shows 2 pieces in their picture (the performance sway bar kit thingy)....  i wonder if removing the rear would make a difference, or if its too hard to remove... or why i've never heard anyone mention the rear sway bar.....
