My 94 kick 1.6/16 auto trans in low range and shift lever in 1st shifts into 2nd and 3rd as I rev the engine to get thru muck.  If it would stay in 1st I could lug through, but have to high rev the engine in 3rd to burn thru?  Any way to lock it in 1st?

If you put the automatic in 1st it shouldn't be climbing into the other gears.  Maybe a problem with your selection lever?

Yes it should def. not come out of first if you have put it down in first.  If that was the case why would first even be there..

im sure if the rpms are too high, the trans is going to shift it.....my old work truck was this way, if you would leave it in 1st gear on the shifter it would wind the motor alomst to redline and slam the next gear....this was in a 94 chevy 1/2 ton truck with a 350 v8 too....im sure most vehicles are this way?? prolly so they cant blow up or some ahhemm....female wasnt paying attention and slapped it in low

It should be bouncing off of the governer rather then shift gears though.  Otherwise it would be worthless for using to climb down hills...

It would seem to make sense that the trans would stay locked in whatever gear you engage the lever at. I have to check my FSM to be sure, in the meantime are there any trans gurus out there?

Been out of town.  Thx for the replys.  When I put the auto trans in low range and 1st gear it will stay there if I don't let the rpms get to high.  This works going downhill, but the brakes help keep the speed down.  When I go up a steep grade and have to put my foot into it it shifts to 2nd and then 3rd.  If I put it in Drive and low range it does seem to have higher gearing in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.   So Low range 1st, even when it shifts up all 3 gears seem to be lower than in Drive low range.  Still don't know if this is snafu or if it should lock in 1st, as the man says" Why else would it be there". 

I was always under the impression that shifting into the "lower" gears on an automatic transmission just moved the shifting pattern.  For Instance, shifting down one gear from Drive stops overdrive from kicking in (if you have overdrive), and down at the L you're basically asking for "the maximum power available for any given speed".  It'll still shift in a way that prevents the engine from tearing itself apart to maintain a certain speed.

My GV and Kick both have the same tranny.  When manually selecting first, it never leaves that gear regardless of RPM.

My bet?  Somethings not right with the tranny.

UPDATE:  A tranny expert here in town says that some of the zuki auto trannys have a safety switch or valve of some kind that lets the tranny shift up if the revs get to high.  He thinks if the tranny does not have other problems, then this is probably the case with mine. 

My 95 1.6/16 with 4 speed auto does the same thing. I hate it. I wish it would stay in 1st for gunnin' up big hills n stuff.

Hmm wierd I have a auto and it has never done this.....

the chevy truck...  It probably had a turbo 400.  Its a fully hydraulic tranny.  Which means when the pressure hits a certain level, its gonna shift.   Reguardless of the gear selection.   I would have to check, but I assume its the same with the zuk trannys.

I don't think it's supposed to do that, I think my tranny is jacked up.

well.  Could be a range switch problem.
