Hi guys
I just bought a 92 Tracker LSI, for a decent price (around here anyways) amd have noticed
quite a bit of oil leaking. Mostly around the pan and bell housing. Its kinda hard to see where exactly its coming from because of an accumulation of crude.

First question
If problem is oil pan, how big of a job is it to change the gasket? Is it easier to remove axle and evrything in its way or just jack the engine up?

If it is not from oil pan gasket is there anywhere in particular i should check next?

I also noticed the tranny (auto) pan leaking, when i checked the dipstick it was almost empty. I obviously added some pronto. Is it common on these models that the gaskets go like this?

I always owned Jeeps so not completely familiar with Sidekick/Tracker known probel areas.

They always leak oil at the back of the head where the distributor bolts on.  It can be the o-ring in the distributor or the other seal that holds the housing for the distributor.  hard to describe, but look from above and that's probably it.  it leaks around the side of the bellhousing making it filthy.  Oil pans can be a pain.  Not sure if you can get it off and replaced without running into other things, like the diff...

replace the filter and gasket immediately for the auto, cause it will just keep leaking, and it probably hasn't been done in years.

What crikeymike sez with this addendum:

Removing the distributor without being able to re-install exactly as it was can goof up your timing.  Take a picture of the rotor position before loosening anything. Mark a line across the joint between the housing and the top of the distributor BEFORE loosening and removing the adjustment bolt and pulling out the distributor.  Use a grease pencil or a scratcher.  That way, all you have to do is match the rotor position exactly with the picture you took and the mark that you made for no timing problems.

Use a sticky silicone grease on the O-ring so that it will stick in place while re-installing the distributor housing.  An incorrectly-seated O-ring was probably the original cause of the leak!  SylGlide works nicely.

Of course, a good pressure-wash cleaning beforehand will help you see if your work took care of the leak.

How much should a mechanic charge for both of these? Im guessing about one hours labour
for both
