Yeah, so last weekend we did a 1000ish kilometer road trip up here in Canada and about 1/4 of the way in, my speedometer stopped working. Went right down to 0, and the odometer stopped counting too. Tach and everything else works fine. Tonight I checked both ends to see if they were connected, and they are. I pulled the connector out of thet transfer case just to see if it was snapped off or something, and a bit of dirty, kinda rusty water spilled out of the cable. Is it time for a new cable?

That reminds me, I need to do that on my SJ.  It died during the TTC a few months ago and I keep forgetting to look at it...

I think you can hook an electric drill up to the bottom of the cable and have someone run it to see if the speedometer moves. 

Replace the cable. they are around $30.00. If it has water and muck in it, it probably rusted or will soon. The middle part the turns is real thin. You can probably pull on both tips from the ends and one end will come out. Don't know if it's definitely the problem but a rusted cable is a rusted cable. I bet it's bad.

How does water get in there though? Does this mean there's water in my transfer case?

I doubt it and I'm not sure how it got in there. Probably just worked its way into it from driving down the road. that's kind of what happened to one of mine one time. The protective ends eventually wear out or break down and it exposes the inner cable. It's not much of a sealed unit anyways.

You shouldn't have water in your transfer case but it's a good idea to change the fluid regularly as part of routine maintenance since zuki transmissions and transfer cases like to whine when you don't keep them up. Change your diffs too while your at it.
