Dead Tracker
« on: November 08, 2008, 05:24:17 PM »
I picked up a 92 Tracker.

The Tracker is giving me hell right now.  I replaced the Alt. today and it will not start.  On Friday when I was messing with it, I saw the Alt belt was shot & then a Alt. bolt broke off.
I have replaced the plugs, checked for spark, and made sure cyl 1 was cyl 1 on the Dis. cap.
But it still will not start, even with starting fluid.

Friday when I saw the Alt belt I put a battery charger on it to get it to start & with it on the Tracker would run in the high RPMs, when it was picked up it wouldn't run in the high RPMs and would only do about 40mph.

After it would set all night it would start, but not run very well, it would only run for a few sec. then die and will not restart.

Could I have taken out the computer when the battery charger was on it?  Any other ideas.

Not too likely you hurt the computer that way. Just for an idea, put the engine at TDC and line the rotor up with #4 on the cap(remove the distributor and turn that, don't move the plug wires on the cap), and see if it tries to start then. If not, check for compression and if it's very low or non-existant than it could be the catalytic convertor is clogged. An easy check for that is to take the exhaust pipe off the manifold and try to start it.

I pulled the #1 plug and it has good compression,  I didn't put my gauge on it, I just put my finger on it to see if #1 compression linded up with #1 on dist.

I will try the dist. thing, but it may be monday before I get time.

If the dist. in out like that, would it run at all?  Or would it run very ruff?
When I had the charger on it, it ran better.  It made me think that the battery being low was messing with the computer.  (Not sure how much the computer does on this old of a Tracker)

I went out and worked on it today.
Moved the dist. like you said.  It was on #1 & I moved it to #4.  Still didn't start.
Checked coil and it was bad, but would still spark.  Replaced it and it still will not start.
Did a comp test and #2 was 0, the others are 115-125psi.
Time to pull teh vavle cover and see if its a flat cam or if its the head gasket.

But, I would think it would still start and run on 3 cyl.

They will start and run on 2 cyl.  Just really rough like.  :D

You said you had spark at the coil, did you check to make sure you have spark at the plugs?  What about gas?

Yes, it had spark at the plugs.
When I replaced the plugs they said gap them to .042, but the sticker under the hood said the gap was .028.  What one is right?

Also when you set the timimg it said to jump the two lower pins on a plug.  Where is that plug?

Go with the sticker under the hood.

Not sure about the plug, might be the one for the computer.

Did you check for gas?

Its getting gas.  I was also spraying carb cleaner in just incase the gas was "bad".  But, it was driven home.  It ran ruff, but ran.  It also had 5 gal. of gas put in on the way home.
And now it will not start.

The plug for the timing just said to jump the 2 lower ones.  It never said where it was or what it was.

The plug you are looking for is right beside the battery! On the front side close to the fender! It will be a small white plug! It has a cover on it! The two you have to cross are on the bottom. Furthiest away from the locking clip!

Thanks.  I may get to mess with it today, but not sure.

your plug gap depends on the specific spark plug itself, try new ones. keep the updates coming! :)
