Manual transmission rebuild
« on: February 02, 2006, 08:33:51 AM »
So my transmission took a dump on me yesterday when I decided to drive to nashville (3 hour trip one way).  When I got there and took an exit and took off from the light.....grrrrrrrrr.... Seems to be really bad in 1-2-3, normal in 4, and just some noise in 5.  I haven't had this transmission in that long maybe a year (7k), but it was a used one I picked up from a salvage yard when my last one did the same thing, except the bearing exploded and got caught in the gears last time causing it to lock up and grind and pop...this time just make noise.  I drove it back, made it fine...just still has that growling noise so I think it can be rebuilt.

SO....I have been looking at rebuild kits online, cheapest I saw was 162 I think for bearings and seals, I don't think I need the syncro kit since it still shifts fine.

How much different are these from other manual transmissions on the inside?  Are there any instructions or at least exploded views so when I tear it apart I am not stuck with a bunch of parts? For the people that have done this....how hard was it?

Anyone know of somewhere the kit would be cheaper or a reliable "will provide instructions" type place?

Or if you have a manual transmission and you live close enough I can come get it cheap....I could always just go the easy route. :D

Sorry for the long post.....just not happy at the moment.  >:(

They are not that hard to fix. The most common bearings to need replacement are the 2 furthest rearward bearings. One is on the top shaft and the other is on the lower shaft. Its not that hard. I did the one in my orange rig, my sisters, and even Zigs. It usually takes about 45 min after the trans is out.

Do you have favorite place to get the rebuild kit, or just find it wherever was cheapest?

Shouldn't be any harder than taking apart
a watch, except you don't need all those
little screw drivers   ;D   LOL
