Intermidant loss of spark, Help!!!!!!!!!
« on: April 07, 2006, 12:49:07 PM »
I have a 1991 sami thats fuel injected.
My problem is after running for about 5 min, the motor looses spark and dies. I go to start it and there is no spark from the coil to dist. after trying to start about four times it then starts sparking and starts up again and runs for another 2 to 3 minutes and then dies again.

1.I used my timing light to make sure on spark condition.
2. Then i checked for continous 12v to the coil, that checked out find when running and even after it died with the key switch on.
3. then i checked the coil.
a. right after the engine died, primary was 1ohm, secondary was 12.45kohm
b. I got the engine running again and turned it of from the key switch and then checked the coil again. primary was 1.6ohm and secondary was 12.33kohm,

I guess my next steps are....
1. checking if the ignitor is still working when i dont get spark. I guess make sure the ecm is still sending a signal to the ignitor.
2. test the pick up to the dist is functioning correctly.

If any one has any ideas or suggestions please reply, it is my daily driver.
Thanks,

Jack Jr.

off the top of my head I would try to get a coil from a working vehicle ie a buddies
and try to eliminate one possiblity the coils are bad for working then not working.

how did you test the secondary coil with an ohm meter it is not a loop it is a copper wire that is wrapped around the primary wire when the primary wire is charged with electricity it produces a magnetic field which induces a electrical charge in the secondary field it does not do anything until the rotor makes a connection and sends the voltage down the plug wire

so if you are getting voltage to the coil then check with a test light or inductive pickup to see if you are getting voltage out also check the coil cold and hot

Good luck

Check the black ground wire from the firewall to the distributor to make sure that the wire is secured by the sheetmetal screw to the body and the inline connector (if any) is not loose.

For checking the coil, yes i did use an ohm meter, a good fluke one actually.
I did check all grounds and the all looked good,  The ground wire from the dist to the firewall could be replaced, i just didnt think that could be it since the engine is grounded.  I guess i could use a jumper wire and connect it straight to battery ground.
I am going to test the dist. pick up now and see how that checks out. I am also going to check the signal out of the triger.

Well, thanks for all the help

Thanks for the input,
i am going to try checking the ouput with an anolog volt/ohm meter.
