Best way to remove rust?
« on: April 09, 2009, 07:15:35 AM »
I just bought a Sammy and it's got alot of surface rust on most of the underside. I want to clean it up so it both looks nice and lasts longer. I'll be removing the axles, springs, etc. anyway, in preparation for a SPOA lift. I'll be doing the work in the back yard. Are sandblasters as messy as I assume they are? I've never used one... don't even know if they make portable ones that I could rent/buy.

What's the best way to remove the rust?

You can pressure wash it with soap & water, or steam clean it - then paint it with a rust neutralizer & follow up with an undercoating. Sand blaster would work - but again - follow up with undercoating, and yes - sandblasting is as "dirty" as you think it is. Pretend you're on a beach with 100 MPH winds, and someone dropping sand from the sky.

Thanks. I'll see how bad things are when I start taking things apart.

Check out evap-o-rust.
I've seen the results at:  http://www.evaporust.com/
The looks impressive.
I've never tired the product myself.
There is on rust here in southeast Arizona, unless the vehicle came from where I grew up in northern Minnesota where, on a quite evening, you can sit outside and hear the cars rust.

POR has been a popular choice for years.
