If you are not missing at least one cam screw, you should check your VIN to make sure you own a Samurai!

Generally speaking, those screws end up in some out-of-the-way place in the top of the head or in the oil pan after a harrowing trip down an oil gallery.

My first article at izook.com was on this topic...  here it is:

http://www.izook.com/tech/samurai/engine/screws/screws.htm

Written waaaay back in 2004...

(Amazingly enough, this article was not in the Ack's FAQ database until a few moments ago...)

I hope that it helps!

That answer to removing the valves is found in the Factory Service Manual.  Do a search for fsm at Ack's FAQ (see link in signature, below).

Select either of the Samurai Factory Service Manuals available - although I would pick the '88 version as it is broken up into three parts so you don't have to download the whole thing.

I don't know about sponsoring ( I haven't got a dime to spend on producing a video) but I am more than willing to put the resulting youtube into the FAQ database!

You might find a sponsor in one of the vendors who sells rebuild kits.

I've worked on alot of samurai motors and I've only ever found one that had all those phillips screws. They all miss at least one and most two. Good luck with your build.

you will need to remove w/ a impact style phillips ( 3/8 style handle you hit with a hammer). as you hit the handle turn the screw, you will strip all of them if you try to just remove. Those screws are factory installed w/ loctite. You also need to insure you install them w/ loctite. Common rookie mistake is to just tighten, resulting in the common loss of 2 or 3 or all 10.

Don't use too much loctite or it will drip into the rails. Some people stack the screws in place as well. I used red loctite as well as setting the screws with the impact driver.

REAL IMPORTANT!

The head gasket can be installed two ways - one of them is SERIOUSLY WRONG!

Be very careful when installing it so that you do not cover any oil passages between the block and the head!
