I'm making a 1.3L Fuely breathe!

Okay, so this might not apply to many as hoped, as finding TBI Sammys isn't easy.  But let me share what I'm doing to mine to get the added ponies.  To be fair,  the mod was first explored by a good Zooker, Randy B. (aka Zooky).

Here's where I started:

Stock 1.3L TBI, bottom end completely rebuilt with SGP.

Here's the list of parts that I needed
  • Entire TBI, Intake and Head from a pre-'95 1.6L 8V Sidekick
  • Rotational Dynamics TBI spacer
  • CALMINI 1.3L header
  • CALMINI 1.3L mid-range cam
  • 2" cat back exhaust

Background: The early 1.6 and 1.3 TBI are nearly identical, with the 1.6L having a larger venturi and higer flow injector.  The 1.6L intake has larger and longer runners.  The 1.6L has bigger valves.  The 1.3L mid-range cam works best with increased aspirtation and exhaust flow (increasing aspiration on a EFI isn't always easy).

Basically, what need to be done is replace the 1.3L TBI to head with the 1.6L stuff.  I'll adress each component as we did.

TBI - The easiest way to identify an early 1.6 TBI is to look at the O2 sensor.  You want parts from a Kick with a 1-wire O2 sensor.  The upper half of the 1.3L TBI needs to be mated to the bottom half of the 1.6 TBI.  The bottom half is what has the larger venturi, and the top half has the correct taps and connections for the Sammy.  Install the 1.6 injector into the 1.3L top half.  The TBI is ready.

Intake Manifold -  Basically straight forward.  One issue, the BVSV sensor valve.  It's on the 1.3L manifold, but the 1.6L only has an untapped boss where it should be.  You could a) drill and tap the boss, b) run an electric BVSV, or c) lose your emissions crap altogether.  We are chosing B right now.  Or you could by pass it all together as the valve opens as soon as the coolant heats up.  Port the manifold to match the head and TBI.  You would be surprised how much you can open it up here.  I've also installed a TBI spacer to add more volume to the intake, and provide more low end grunt.

Head - same thing, straight forward.  You will need to use the 1.3L disty, and we used the 1.3L rockers as we were told they are stronger.  Install the 1.3L cam, as this is the brains that will make this all work.  Port and Polish the intake and exhaust ports.  I would recommend having the head decked to bump up compression (we did).  Use the 1.3L valve cover.  Add the CALMINI header and route it out thru a 2" exhaust.

Now, if you do this, the best thing is to set each intake assemply side by side, and you will see what needs to be moved where.  You will retain the stock 1.3L ECM, MAP sensor, Coil pack and Ignitor.

I'm almost out the door on this, just waiting for some exhaust stuff to arrive and I'm done.  On Randy's sammy, which was stock except for the 1.6L TBI/Head swap, he was able to do 100 mph easily.  Not too shabby.

I'll keep you all "posted" on the results of this.

Yankee Tim, Do you know if a 1.6L 8v intake will bolt up and work on a non tbi 1.3L? My head has a mid-range cam, 1.6L exhaust valves, header and 2" exhaust.

It will, but you will need the computer and harness from the Kick if you are going to run the efi.

The Carb will bolt on to the 1.6 head, but you will need an electirc fuel pump

Wow, I completely forgot.

Really cool.  We swapped the 1.3 injector back into the 1.6 TB, and his made it best.  We will need to put a adjustable cam sprocket on to dial it in perfect, as it's a little stumly off the line.

But when it his about 2000+ RPMs, hold on.  She rockets.

As a comparison, I "dragged" LuvMyZuki at Gon Zookin.  He had a 1.6 16V with 31's, and me on 33's.  While he did get off the line a bit faster, at the end of 100 yards or so, my front bumber was at his rear.

I'm impressed, as I still have a lowly 1.3.  Overall, I am VERY happy the the results.  And it looks way cool under the hood.
