Farmers Jack as a winch?

Farmers Jack as a winch?

How are these jacks as a come along are they safe or is the smaller come along better for the job?The farmers jack is rated at 3 tons but that is for lifting what about pulling ?Thanks  for your time >:D

ive used mine like a come along its crappy thoe because you only have the 48 or 62 inches that you can move the jack and by the time you take up the slack its even lower

If its one or the other I would choose the hi-lift. I'm sure you'd use it much more than a comealong.

i just picked up a hi-lift, my come-along was toast.  i went this route because i also needed a jack.  i have yet to try it as a winch.

id just get a hi-lift, and forget about the come along.

The hi-lift is slow as a "winch" but it will get the job done.  I would look into getting a length of chain and a Jack-Mate.

Back in high school my buddy and I got his dad's F-150 stuck up past the axles in some pretty nasty snow and mud.  Like I said it took a while but we were able to get it out of there.  With out the hi-lift we would have been walking.

One word to the wise though.  When using the hi-lift as a winch you need something that doesn't stretch to hook it to.  The nylon webbing recovery straps will stretch and eat up the precious little travel that the jack has.  Chain and possibly a synthetic winch rope extension would be good to have along with you.

Just some of my thoughts and experiences.
