Rear Differential Leak on '93 'kick
« on: July 03, 2007, 08:19:03 AM »
My '93 has developed a leak at the rear differential.
Here are some pics.

From the front passenger side:

What is this tube coming off the differential? (From front on top passenger side)

Rear passenger side:

Any idea what may be leaking?

that tube is a breather hose, i beleive.  That looks like the seal around the third member is weak and leaky, thus all the gear oil oil coming out and wrapping around the rest of the axle.

not sure on a fix for that, i havent had that problem yet. wait for a more, uh.. knowledgeable member to stop by  ;D

Yep, that's the breather tube.  :)

I would drain your rear axle and pull the third member.  Clean it off and put some new silicone sealer on and bolt it back together.  If that is where it is coming from it should fix the issue.

Alternatively, just clean it all off and drive it around a bit at lower speeds.  That should allow you to find a little more specifically where the leak is.   Make sure you still have enough oil in the rear diff though first.

Ok, draining seems straight forward enough, any good directions for pulling the third member (sorry I'm not too sure exactly what the third member is)  All I have is the Haynes manual, but I haven't checked it yet.  I find many sources of information keep me from missing something when I am doing it for the first time.

Try pulling the hose off first and make sure it is not all plugged up, I have used very little sealer on the thirds and have never had a leak, at least not like that! you could have rusted through the housing (only 11 gage) or have a bad weld, there was a recall on that, maybe get it fixed for free, free is always good.

I keep looking at that photo. It looks like theres a hole in the casing right next to the breather. It also doesn't look that healthy around the breather take off.

I was cleaning it off yesterday, and I think that was just a shadow from the flash rather than a hole, but I'm not sure.  I have used the oil leak indicator dye before for an engine leak, and that made tracing it down much easier.  I am considering doing that with the diff as I want to know where the leak is coming from.  BTW, how much oil is supposed to be in the diff.  I want to top it up before putting the indicator in so that there is plenty of oil to leak out :)

Lol.  Good luck with that.  Better have some lightning-quick hands.

if the other suggestions don't help i read something that indicated the diff breather could be crimped/squashed causing a guys rig to keep leaking for no apparent reason until he found this and fixed it up, no leaky after.

Any trick to getting the diff breather hose off?  I figure that is the easiest thing to start with.

sorry about that, I use a 2.5 gallon paint pot with 60 psi to put in my gear oil and I always put more in that I should by the book anyway, but ya I have been doing it a while so i'm still fast at it ,LOL
