Changes in soft top mounting sidekick
« on: April 27, 2007, 08:13:24 PM »
Yeah, I know. My first post in here shoul not be a stupid question but I did a search without finding the info I need. I have an 89 sidekick that I am looking for a top for and have a possible lead on a good used one. I read on here that the hardware changed in 94, is that the only difference?  If so I may get it at a good price and find the hardware in the junk yard. Has anyone done this?
This is my third Suzuki, first two were 88 Samurai convertibles. I am getting ready to put the third motor in my sidekick and I hope this one lasts. LOL

Smoked first motor I had built for it going through a puddle that was a wee bit to deep. Drained the block and removed the plugs on the trail, new oil filter and air filter. Started it up, ran rough then smoothed right out. Rod broke on the interstate heading to work three days later. TOAST
The motor that is in it know lost oil pressure, I think it may need a head since the cam bores were out of spec but I got the engine I am putting in with 58.000 miles for $80 more than a remaned head so hopefully this one will last.
Could not kill those 1.3L engines in the samurais I had, maybe try one of those next. LOL

Can you take the hardware off a newer one and put it on the 89? The top was brand new but will not work.

The soft top that was on my Tracker was all torn up before I got it and the guy replaced it for me but its a different kind of soft top than the original ones. My rear window was cut from someone trying to steal my stereo but they didnt get anything except they just cut my window. Well i bought a window from someone for a Tracker and it didnt fit to short. My back window clips to my tail gate unluck other Trackers. Anyone know where I can get one like that? Just the rear window.

Do you know who made the top? If it is a bestop you may contact them. The back window on mine goes into clips on the top of the tailgate, that is the way they were made up to 95.

JC Whitney carries a a few different tops for Samurais and Sidekicks/Trackers. My '90 Tracker had a nice 2-piece Bestop that was purchased from JC Whitney...

The only place I see a name on it is the back window and it says Outland.

Well, I tried as I am sure you did to find a website for that top maker and only found some with that name at j.c.whitney and tops-4-less. I would take the vehicle to an upholstery shop or a convertible top shop and see what they would charge to make a new rear window. That is probaly what I am going to do since to replace my top with what is on it is going to cost about $350.00.

dam i wish my crappy city/town had one lol i dont know of any. I was so pissed when it happened because the top was about a year old when it happened. Why dont people get an actual job instead of stealing stuff and selling it
