Exhaust plans......will this work?
« on: April 11, 2009, 06:01:53 PM »
Will a MagnaFlow direct fit catalytic converter, with 2.25" pipe and a Dynomax super turbo muffler work?

                                          AND

2). Will it sound ok?? (i.e. somewhat deep, throaty growl, without sounding too "rocketish and annoyingly loud"?)

  Would be for a 1.6 16v Tracker.

Thanks much  ;D

"Would be for a 1.6 16v Tracker. "

That should answer your question right there....

My own opinion...probably not.  Too small of an engine to get any sort of clean sounding throaty growl.

If you do try it....be sure to let us know what happens.

As far as it working....I don't see why not.   But the sound it makes might not be what you expected.

This is the 1.3L with a exhaust similar to what you describe, except with a glass pack and no cat...

I just uploaded it, might take a while to process it. i will post another one soon with a 4500 rpm run...

Video was to big to post on here.

Hillbillydave:

That sounds great! Exactly what I'm looking for. However, I am going to run a cat, cuz it's a DD. I have debated running a glass pack, but some say they are TOO loud?

Do you have much experience with exhaust applications? You can easily get a good tone out of a tracker. I have straight pipe from the stocker header back with just a cherry bomb installed on mine since i bought it, and it sounds pretty good for a Tracker. Not ricey or pinge' a small growl. Mind you will never get the sound of displacement (V6-V8) But with that set up, it should sound pretty nice, just what your looking for I beleive.

Hi Eric,

I have an 88 Samurai, 1.3 L, with K & N MegaFlow filter, header, cat, 2" exhaust, Cherry bomb and it has a very nice sound (I like it anyway)  It is not too loud and is not tinny or rice burner sounding.

You can listen to it here:

Drone637 just put a 2 1/4" exhaust and Thrush Turbo muffler on his SJ410.  It has a nice low growl to it, not bad for a 1 liter motor.  Has a small crackle when letting off at higher rpm's.   We used (3) 45 & (1) 90 degree angle sections and about 5 feet of exhaust pipe to weld up his system.  It had to wrap up around his new 4 link suspension.
93 Tracker,XL7 springs & 1" raised spring pads in front with YJ springs in back, home built bumpers rear & front (w/winch), 2" x 4" rock tubes,  ARB front & rear, converted Sami rear to IFS, 33x12.5x15  aluminum rims, roll cage, 2.7L w/5 speed auto.

I run a K&N filter in the stock airbox, Doug Thorley header, high flow cat and a 3 chamber Flowmaster it's not too loud and made a huge difference in mid rpm's and still passes Kalifornia smog requirements. I have had loud exhausts on small engines they may sound cool but for a daily driver the incessant buzzing can be annoying, just something to think about.
