Everything did working, clutch cable split, now nothing works
« on: September 16, 2009, 01:47:47 PM »
Hi
I just got my Samurai and have been working on it to get it running for the winter. I replaced the starter, rebuilt the ignition/stering coloum replaced hoses blah blah blah, it ran well till I parked it, tried to start it a couple hours later, It didnt, I found the clutch cable was split so i replaced it and I still have nothing. Was sure it wasnt starting cuz of the cable... HELP??!!!! My husbands already threatening to get rid of it.

there is a little wire connected to the small pole on the starter....this wire will get loose and won't make good connection.

NExt is to make sure you've got some good power coming out of the batt and that the connections are clean and tight. Take them apart, clean them and re-install them tight. If you can still spin it with your hands then you might need a new clamp.

There is a switch at the clutch pedal. This one will cancel out the starter. I've crossed these wires on all my zukes and then you can start it without the clutch.

Does it make a click sound or no sound at all? next you can jump the starter....if I recall right you connect the little pole to the ground and it should turn over. DOn't quote me on this one but it won't hurt anything to try it.

I'm guessing that the sound described above is either a relay or the starter solenoid rattling - because of low voltage when the solenoid pulls in.

Bad grounds or bad connections to the battery would be my first suspects - add to that the "split clutch cable" and I'm wondering if the starter return cable is connected.  There is usually a heavy ground cable from the battery negative either to the engine block, clutch bellhousing or transmission case (varies from one vehicle to the next) that carries the return current from the starter.  At least one of the vehicles I have owned had this attached to the bolts holding the starter.  If it's broken, disconnected or missing, the starter return current will flow through whatever connection it can find and quite often burn or destroy the connection - I have seen clutch cables, choke (manual) cables and accelerator cables all destroyed like this, and I have heard horror stories about transmissions being damaged by the return current flowing through gears & bearings and 'welding' the parts together at the contact points.
