Ok, a closer one. Wow, lots of noises in that engine. I must be deaf. Camera picks up more than my own ears. :)

I agree with Skyihranger, sounds like an adjuster nut might
of come loose, letting the adjuster turn anyway the wind blows

All right then... I did think it was in the top end. Sounds like I get a gasket set and some feeler gauges and go to town.

You don't need a gasket set, unless you have a leak.  The valve cover gasket is rubber and reuseable.

Yeah, I know. It's like 10 bucks for a gasket set though. Might as well do it. There IS a leak in the back of that motor somewhere, I think it's either the valve cover or the oil pan. Haven't given it much of a look, but I'll at least take care of one of the options anyway.

Rear of the engine leaks are almost always the distributor drive, an O ring
and some gray silicone are all that's needed for that repair

Yeah Wild, an O ring, some silicone sealer, a few hours, a mirror to see if you got all the gunk off, and some scraped knuckles! Then you get to have all the fun of re-timing your ignition. But Wild is such a nice fellow, I bet He'd come over and help  ;D

Hah! Yeah, he's cool, though. I watched the guy rebuild a motor over two days in Moab. Nuts, but he was able to make the trip home!

Well, I set her lash this weekend, and it still ticks. There was a lot of varnish in the top of the motor, and I'm wondering if I've got something sticking. So... going to try the Marvel route for a little bit. I couldn't tell if anything was wrong with the rockers, etc. All of the adjuster nuts were tight. Maybe I've got a bad spring? I couldn't tell without taking anything apart I don't think.  :-\

If it were a broken spring it could cause that kind of tick, but I think you
would of seen that, the only other tick I heard like that in another engine,
although it sounded more like a rod, was a valve seat that worked loose
and was slamming home every valve cycle.

Could it be piston slap? That will knock with every power stroke, and
could possibly be checked by pulling 1nplug wire at a time, just make sure
to ground it so you don't mess up an ignition module

Yeah I'll try that check for piston slap. I didn't see any broken springs... I might tear into the top again this week or next (won't have time this weekend) and take a closer look at the seats. That would mean a valve job though, right? Bleck.

Man, I thought my motor was noisy. The first time I took off my valve cover I couldn't believe the amount of varnish and other crap coating the inside. Since then I've only run synth oil, mostly because of the turbo, and always toss a quart of Lucas in with each oil change. Cleaned up the inside real well and quieted down the top end as too.  Have you ever changed the timing belt?
