Done my body lift finally...shifter boot issue
« on: October 06, 2007, 11:07:32 PM »
Well, I recieved my Sky's 2" Sidekick body lift just in time for the long weekend, installed it today, and now my transmission shifter barely wants to stay in 2nd, 4th, and Reverse. I noticed that there are 2 boots for the transmission shifter, there is a softer one that mounts to the body and a thicker one that sits in the plastic center console. I had to completely remove the thicker one, otherwise it would pop right out of those gears. It will stay in those gears now but I can tell that it is binding quite a bit. I spent a half hour on the search and it looks like if I flip the soft boot upside down, it should be ok again.
Question is, how do you remove the boot from the shifter stick? And does this actually work?

Will I need to do the same thing on the t-case?

Thanks

I dont even have a body lift, and I removed the thicker one along with the center console for that same reason. I noticed it shifted a lot better once I took those things off(but now the transmission is going out and making lots of noise(not related))

I already have the thick one off though. I'm pretty sure I need to flip the soft one upside down, that should fix the problem. Then I'll replace the thick one with a nice leather/vinyl one.

I had my body lift instaled & the guy cut the boot around shifter to solve this problem, but first try & slide the boot up the sifter before cuting  ;)

check to make sure the shifter is clearing the body. mine made contact and needed bending.

I also ditch the console boot. and I think flipped the soft boot.

For a 2" sidekick body lift, go ahead and remove the flatter boot that's got the slits cut in it.  Then with some wd40, slide the funky accordian style boot off the shifter, and flip it upside down and around 180 degrees, then reinstall it.  You shouldn't have anything touching after that and it should shift as normal without modifying the shifter, any metal, or anything else.  You can even have the knob back on once it's done.

I ended up flipping the inner boot upside down. It works good now, but the console boot still binds so I'm looking for a  leather/vinyl soft boot, like from a Toyota 4Runner. I wish I read your post earlier, crikeymike, because I bought a soft suede boot but it was the wrong shape/size so I tried to use it with a cut-down version of the console boot, but it still didn't work. So now I still have no console boot, but at least it's not killing the syncros anymore!
