decision on getting engine work...
« on: May 12, 2009, 04:15:23 PM »
well, trucks had a front end oil leak from the day i bought it over a year and a half ago. it need the timing belt done as its at 315,000 km. and that oil leak hasnt been good for the belt.
i got a local dealer and suzuki specialist shop to quote me prices for getting the work done...
suzuki dealer- 4-5 hours, total bill up around 800-900 bucks (parts included)
specialist- 5-6 hours, recomends valve adjustment, and labor at just over 500 bucks.

if i remember right parts were about $200 or so.

i dont know... rebuilt motors are just over 1200... is it worth getting the work done on an older tired engine or just swap it for a new one.

i have no where to work on it myself, so thats out of the question.

engine also seems to have the tipical distributor oil leak as well (its old, i dont blame it)
do i bite the bullet and get the work done or just say the hell with it and swap it, but thats also a new clutch, and the labor to swap the engine by either of those same shops.

I have seen alot of rebuilds where shops only do the basic. Wash, hone and install std pistons bearings etc. If you choose to rebuild by a shop and not buy a new motor make sure they bore the block, turn the crank, HOT TANK all parts followed by glass beading. The motor should come back 100% new looking. The oiling holes are so small on 1.3 and 1.6 it requires a full clean job to insure removal of all particles that have the possibilty of clogging the small holes.......PS, ONLY USE JAPAN PARTS, DONT USE ECONOMY KITS......THEY SUCK . 8)
Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, all right. We got 4:11 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some freakin' muscle.

i wasnt going to get my engine rebuilt, thats the local suzuki shop that rebuilds these things, they all get machined and honed/bored and i was assured they use quality parts and gaskets.
