Jeep springs on a samurai?
« on: August 27, 2004, 01:24:33 PM »
Ive heard people talk about it before, but say I already had the springs for a Jeep Wrangler. What would it take to put them on a samurai. Where can I get the brackets to mount the springs? And, about how much would the brackets cost?

I think I might have found what I was looking for on Trail Tough.com. They sell the shackles and bracketry and mounting plates for them.. So, instead of making and wasteing a thread, does anybody else run Jeep springs on their Samurai?

A couple of sources for the YJ springs are:
Breeze Industries, Trail Tough, Rocky Road Outfitters, Northcoast Offroad, Asian Auto Parts of Arizona, etc. just do a search on Google and you will find a lot.

A lot of the guys over at pirate run yj's and swear by them. I plan on YJ's w/ toy axles. Have the YJ's and toy's already, and am looking at the TT bracketry also.

That was my next question, and what is the weight difference between the Jeep and the samurai, versus springs rates and softness or stiffness of ride...

Thanks everyone.

I'm running YJ's spoa with TT M/L's out back and  JP eater kit from RRO up front. They are WAY softer than the stockers. I run stiffy pro cramp ES3000's all around and it still is very soft and compliant. Rockstarr, I don't think these will work well with a SBC, they are WAY too flexy, maybe a CJ front, there are many companies who make a kit for these, or you could run a longer shackle up front and drill the rear spring mount bolt hole further back on the bracket. What you want to do is keep the wheel centered in the wheelwell, if anythng slightly to the rear to allow for slight movement forward through spring travel. Good luck, sounds like you want to support the SBC and get a better ride? That may be tough to do, but not impossible.

That is what I would like to do. With the stock samurai springs, I bottom out to easy and have quite a bit of a rough ride.

Thanks. You just saved me some trouble.  ;)

Here's a suggestion. Use the full sized Jeep Wagoneer, you know..the trucks with the fake wood trim a v8 and leaf springs, front springs. They are only about 1 1/2" longer than the YJs with the same mounting as the YJs. They are soft, supple, very flexy, can carry a load, and will perform very well. I have them on the front of my lwb sammy with much pleasure. I love them. I had to remove the shortest leaf from a 7 leaf pack in order for them not to be too stiff for the 4 cyl. In stock trim, the 6 or 7 leaf packs should be great for the v8. I also have the Jeep Wagoneer rear springs on the back, won't work on a swb sammy, no room. The rears are about 17" longer than the stock sammy springs, about 11" loger than the YJs. If you have a rear bumper tire carrier setup on the back of your sammy, with a sbc under the hood, you should be able to use 2 sets of Wagoneer fronts untouched under the sammy.
Hope that helps.

i dont think breeze makes the brackets for the springs, i talked to them and they really persuaded me not to do it, and to just get their hinged shackle setup thing...
just as much flex or more,
i wanted it for ride quality though, and they said the downfalls of the approach and departure angle are way too much for what you get in return

I will definately look into that. Any idea on what year wagoneers to be safe?  My spare tire hangs off of my tailgate.

I think I would have to agree with the CJ front spring idea.  I am running Rancho competition 2" CJ fronts for the front springs.  I am running them SPUA ,and between the 1" lift shackles, and the springs I got 5-5.5"" of lift.  I ended up removing 3 leafs from these springs to soften them up enough that my wife would ride in my sammy.  I think with the weight of a SBC up front, they might be perect as is.

Does anyone sell a kit to swap in CJ springs?
