Sidekick Engines
« on: December 04, 2005, 10:50:30 AM »
I was just wondering if the track/kick engine are interference fit.  I need this info to try and figure out why my engine blew up.

No, I tested both 16 and 8 valve engines.
Some others have said they do have interference
engines, but these might be Spanish models with
a different power plant

Ditto on that.  North American OEMs are non-interference.

Did the connecting rod on Piston #3 try an escape attempt?

The curious ones want to know what happened...

Spanish 1.6 engines are the same as the Jap engines.

I'm drawing a blank.  What are you calling interference and non-interference engines?

on an interference engine when the timing belt breaks the valves will hit the top of the pistons and non interference wont hit.

Thanks.

Because of the reliability of a chain, as
opposed to a rubber belt, many are of
the interference type, but I don't know
which ones are or are not.

The J Series (1.8-2.0) are interfereance engines

Blow the chain...toast the valves...got one in the shop right now.

Wait a minute.

The 1.6L 8-valve is NOT an interference engine, but the 1.6L 16-Valve engine IS an interference engine.  It says so right in the FSM.

My manual says the 16V is an interference motor as well, but I never checked for valve clearance myself.

So you would think, many 16V engines are, but
I personally put the engine at TDC and turned the
cam by hand, no hitting of valves, maybe while running
and breaking you might have a different story, but I
checked it just for the info to know first hand
