clunk in front end when i turn sharp??
« on: May 28, 2007, 06:55:38 PM »
I just got my 2in coil spacers in now something in my front end clunk when i make a sharp turn...usually at slow speeds.  My camber is way out till i get the bolts...coul this hae something to do with it?  Im thinking the sharp turn is just put alot of stress on my cv's...not sure tho

This COULD be normal with the alignment that far out, but sounds like the CVs are going out to me. I don't know why anyone would do the lift without correcting the camber - it's dangerous.

If the coil spacers are actually 2" up front, the clunk is probably the cv's. They are probably not up to the task of handling the angles caused by your 3+ inches of front lift without any diff drop...

Jeremiah..

what are the risk factors of the camber bein out?  This will only be till my bolts come in

Digger..

Many people use 2in spacers up front..John1974 has 3in lift coils up there with no diff drop and no problems...i guess im just one of the unlucky ppl in this world

no real "DANGER" in having camber to far positive or negative, but you will burn though tires like crazy, and if cross caber is not in spec your truck will pull.  just go to you local tire shop and have 'em through it on the alignment rack.  the 100-150 dollars they will charge you to fix it right.  just make sure you go to a reputable shop that will do an inspection, repace broken parts and give a warranty

Good news guys..well sorta.  I took the 'ol tracker in for an alignment (I'm an auto student so I was doing it myself)  and when i got it all racked up i saw something that horrified me.  The steel tubing that is welded to both of the front control arm brackets were CRACKED!!!  I thought to myself "Oh Shit!!"  Well anyway a guy i know came in and took a look at it and said "shit i can weld that back together" lol.  I told him to go for it.  What he did was weld 1/4" steel plates on both sides from steel tubing to the brackets that the front of the control arms bolt to.  After this was all finished i took it out for a drive and no more clunks when I turned sharp.  I was so happy!!  I thought i might be towin this thing to the scrap yard..nope!  Let me tell you all how this must of happed (cracking the front frame)

Well, it was the day after i got my 2in coil spacers in (yesterday) and I was with my girlfriend and decided to see what the 'ol tracker could do.  So I went up into some local trails and was goin about 10mph in 4Low.  All of a sudden...BOOM!!  The tracker smashes to a complete stop!!  I thought to myself SHIT!! I got out to see I rammed a foot tall tree stump with my front right tire.  I was worried i blew out a tire but was surprised to see it was fine...I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD CRACK THE FRAME!!  I'm glad I saw the crack today cause I could of seriously got hurt because two control were only bein held on by strut and ball joints.  Oh well its all fixed so now i just gotta watch out for them damn tree stumps...those little bastards!! lol

I also know of one person that has 3" coil spacers shoved in the front and back as well as huge strut extensions and he didn't bother to lower the diff at all. That Tracker's CV's lasted about 3 trail days total and I've never seen it back since. I'm not talking out of my a$$, I am speaking from personal experience. If you lift the front more than 2" to 2-1/2" total (or a max of a 1-1/2" front spacer) without lowering the diff, it's just a matter of time before you have problems.  How soon the problems will show up depends on the age and wear of your CV's. If you have well-greased like-new ones, they might work just fine for a year or more at an extreme angle, but if you have the factory original ones with 100K miles or more on them, they might only last a month...

OUCH!! sounds like the hits just keep coming for you. No hurry at all, just let me know. Maybe we can work something out, I might need some parts or something. I could let a pair of spacers go cheaper. Hope all works out.

So your saying that 1.5" coil spacers will be fine with the CV's? I bought some awile back and I am waiting to get strut spacers and longer shocks to put them on just need to gather some motivation to do it lol.

Just trim them on a band saw  ;D If you don't have one, go to a woodworking shop, and pay the guy $10 to do it ;)
