Help someone removed my efi (no it wasnt me)and put on a vw 1barrel carb. Guess thats why it was so cheap. I really dont know whats wrong but hawks has my ecm.Should I try to fix the efi or should I just put on a carb. I dont really have alot of money for this cheap trail beater. Until I get moma back on the trail  and she sees what shes missing. Then maybe we can put more in it. Any advice will help.

Hi.

Quick question:  Is this a Samurai or a Tracker/Sidekick?

If Tracker/Sidekick, definitely send pics!  That has to be an interesting-looking transplant!

If Samurai:

It probably had a hitachi carburetor which had an Engine Control Module (ECM).  If not, it had a Throttle Body Injection (TBI) system also with an ECM.  I don't know if they shared the same intake, so if someone slapped a carb on the TBI intake, that may be part of the problem.

One cheapo-idea is to find an old Toyota or Hyundai Pony carburetor and slap it on to get stuff working.

There are links to several carb articles - two of which are the Pony and the Toyota - at the Beta version of Ack's FAQ which might help you figure out what to do.  This link is in my signature - just click on the yellow button to go to the Beta Site.

If the VW carb is not a total loss, you might be able to get it running just as easy.  Post some pics and any information that you have (model numbers, etc) on the carb and maybe we can help you though this.

Who knows,  maybe we can add another carb to the list of workable Hitachi replacements!

1992 tracker. TBI and it was the biggest cob job I ever say and thats saying alot. I already removed it but it did run   kinda. It still had efi fuel pump. I just dont know about the weber. I do have a rebuildable 22r carb but Im afraid It would be to much. What do you think. how about sami intake ,wil it fit 1.6. Might be easier to adapt to.

it's a WEBER! That's different!

Your biggest problem is the intake, then.  I assume that the head is an 8-valve.  If so, it MAY be possible to bolt up a 1.3 intake to it. I Don't know for sure.  I have a 1.3 Head on my 1.6 block with a Weber 32/36 DGAV carb and it works great.

Here is what I would do:  check with "Sarge" the Weber guru at either the ORC Geo Forum http://bbs.off-road.com/ubbthreads/ or the Zuwharrie.com Samurai Tech forum http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/board,12.0.html and ask if you can slap a 1.3 intake onto a 1.6 8-valve head.

There is a tuneup article at Izook.com that will help once you get things back together: http://www.izook.com/tech/samurai/engine/weber/weber.htm

Let us know in a reply here if you CAN slap a 1.3 intake onto a 1.6 8-valve header (unless someone here already knows...  :-\  )

Thanks Ack   thats good info. When I put A 1.6 8v in my sami I think I used the sami intake with a weber. You just helped me remember. Know anything about making the weber run on angles.
